Norway, as a 5 mln country, get super luck with two exceptional 2k6+ players and A LOT OF decent 1k7-2k TG players. Some countries with equal or even more population have literally nothing! And you want MBL team up with aM...

No. A big prizepool is not the primary motivation for this event, or I would wait a year for MS to maybe put more money into events.

If they want to help raise awareness/fundraise etc then I'm all for it and I'm happy to work with them, but if they don't want to I won't force them to.

I say just let everyone represent whatever country they feel the most proud to represent. No need for walls, border guards and passport checks in a damn video game. Most people will want to represent their own country anyway - whatever they feel is their own country.

"Imagine there's no countries" then...why should we do a nations cup in the first place?
Lets just call it 3v3 tournament so that every friend can team up together.
And i dont agree with the argument that we know almost who is gonna win because especially in aoe that has always been the problem since viper or who is teaming him is most likely gonna win, just for once let the throne to someone else

nations cup for me should be like in any other events, if you have played for a nationality in previous nations cup u stick to it, otherwise this is less serious and doesn´t looks great.

I go watch nations cup 1 & 2 and this one, and then 1 player play 3 diferent countries, then for me would lose the special feeling nations cup always gave to me.

Even if it's not the primary motivation, having $40,000 to spend on prize money, admin, and a LAN finals sure is nice.

I think you misunderstood me. I’m pointing out that to me, either MbL should either be allowed to play for Austria/wherever, or DauT shouldn’t be allowed to play for Germany. Or it must at least be explained why DauT can play for Germany (which already has loads of players) while MbL cannot play for anywhere other than Norway - hence why I’m asking what defines “stranded” enough to join another country.

Specifically, I don’t mean that I want MbL to play for Austria/whatever - I’d rather see Nations Cup be properly grouped by citizenship, or at least residence. I’m using MbL and Austria as an example - in comparison to the prospect of DauT in Germany.

There's no ideal solution to the nationality debate but I think a relaxed approach makes sense. Nobody in the community has the inclination or resources to vet every player's nationality, and there would be a double standard if e.g. Viper was barred from representing Germany but other players are able to get away with representing non-native countries just because they're less well known.

Introducing some kind of strict standard—e.g. you have to hold a passport for the nation you represent—also risks opening a huge can of worms. How would we treat a team that wants to represent Scotland, or Tibet, or Catalonia?

I think we just have to trust that in a competition like this with a relatively low prize pool, top players will make decisions about who they represent in good faith and not for purely cynical reasons. And we can hopefully rely on admins to use their judgment when it comes to controversial cases and teams that push the limits of what can count as a "nation."

I'd have a hard time believing Viper would even choose to represent Germany in a NATIONS Cup because he's always seemed like a fairly proud SwedNorwegian anyway. He's played so many TG tournies with his boi Joadn but NC is something else.

I do think having something like a former Yugoslavia / Balkan team could be a shout in situations where certain countries with a tiny AOE pool could join together

This came up during an interview at the ECL Lan and Viper said he'd feel really weird not representing Norway. Maybe if this tournament was going to be 4v4 like last time, when Norway didn't even field a team (IIRC), then it would be conceivable that Viper could play for Germany instead. But this is a 3v3 and he and MbL are more than good enough to prop up a third player, so I can't see it.

Still, it's an interesting question.
