Hidden Cup 2 | Announcement

1551055421774.png

After the incredible success of the first AoE2 Hidden Cup, I am proud to announce Hidden Cup 2! Together with Microsoft, the event has a prizepool of $10,200, and will include 16 of the best players in the world.

In the Hidden Cup 2 casters, players, and viewers will be unaware of player identities until the tournament is completed. Players can no longer prepare for who their opponent will be in the next round. Instead, they have to be on their "A game" and adapt to their unknown challenger's playstyle. Higher skilled players no longer have an easy ride to the 2nd and 3rd rounds. There is no knowing how difficult a task each round will be as their opponents are completely random. This puts greater emphasis on preparation, strategy and of course... mind games!

Hidden Cup 2 Rules & Settings
Hidden Cup 2 Sign Ups

Hidden Cup 1 certainly provided some amazing games and results ( See the results here.) Shockingly, TaToH, DauT, Yo, and Vivi all lost in Round 1! Miguel had an insane showing, beating DauT in Round 1 and Liereyy in Round 2. Riut played fantastic, beating Yo in R1 and losing to MbL in the final game of their semi-final series. Then in an exciting finish, TheViper and MbL gave us a fantastic finals! Hidden Cup #2 will feature 16 players this time. The top 14 sign-ups are guaranteed a spot, and the 15th-30th rated sign ups will compete in a 16 man qualifier for the final position. The event promises even more excitement and upsets!

Hidden Cup 2 participants will randomly be given accounts to mask their identity throughout the tournament. This identity will be kept to themselves until the users are revealed at the conclusion of the event. The usernames will be: BledaTheHun, GodsOwnSling, HrolfTheGanger, JoanOfArc, KingAlfonso, Nobunuga, Tamerlane, WillyWallace, AttilaTheHun, El_Cid, ErikTheRed, GenghisKhan, LaHire, OrnluTheWolf, RobinHood, Subotai. For TheViper's sake, let's hope he doesn't get the Joan account!

Additionally, players will play using a custom Userpatch (https://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/1139/v15-RC-Anonymous) which will do the following:

- no multiplayer game setup ping display
- no save/vote panel ping display
- no yellow/red/turtle lag indicators

This will further mask the identity of each player, and add to the confusion contestants might experience. Thanks so much to scripter for working on this masterpiece!

Streaming Policy

Due to the nature of this event players are not allowed to stream their POV on any streaming website. Failure to comply will result in potential ban and replacement. Players are also asked to refrain from streaming altogether on April 13th and 14th.

Hidden Cup 2 is completely open for casters. From casters to viewers, the goal is to have as many people enjoying Hidden Cup 2 as possible. Casters are expected to have the Hidden Cup 2 tournament banner visible on their overlays. However, in efforts to make this even easier for casters the tournament banner will be available in different color options. This is so channels can use a banner that matches their overlays, which will increase the production quality across the board for this event. This banner will slightly differ from the AoEZone banner and will be available soon. Additionally, all broadcasters of the event will be thanked publicly for their involvement on every day of the main event on T90Official's channel. Casters interested in being involved should PM robo on aoezone for access.

The event is streamed over four days at 13GMT every day. Days 1-3 use recorded games and the final day is live. Further info can be found in the settings for this tournament.

There will be prediction & guessing contests for this event. More info will be announced closer to the start of the event, so stay tuned!

Amazing, looking forward !

The top 15 sign-ups are guaranteed a spot, and the 16th-23rd rated sign ups will compete in an 8 man qualifier for the final position. The event promises even more excitement and upsets!
Please consider inviting 12 players and letting the other top 4 players qualify, otherwise it seems a bit pointless to even include a qualifier.

Is it not possible to reveal identity after every round and give new account names after every round ? This will make the games more exciting IMO. Wouldn't it be better to know the identities after every games ? Because when you reveal the identities after tounlrnament completion, most of the spectators kind of forget the games and who they were cheering for . I can inqgine myself cheering for the player who is laming and going for aggressive strats ,, only to realize 2 hours later that he was against my favourite player .
Most importantly i believe this will safeguard against players knowing who they are up against because of communication . Last year, Miguel after defeating Lierrey and Daut knew he was facing Viper because Daut told him & Viper . This kind of ruins the different feeling of the tournament for the players.

Maybe we can have a poll on this on what the community prefers
P.S - Well done one the 'open casting' T90

That's really great T90. I like the fact that every major caster in our community has their sort of signature event and they're all unique and have a different spin to them without seeming gimmicky or pointless.

Memb has KotD - the premier Arabia event of the year with some interesting balance experimentations.

Nili has NAC - the premier LAN event of the year with fun settings and great player and caster interactions.

T90 has HC - one of the most original tournament ideas ever accomplished by removing almost any pre-game bias or assumptions. Not to mention it's casted by probably the most likable casting duo: T90 and his buddy Dave.

Great time to be an Age of Empires 2 fan. Thank you everyone who's making this possible. Including Microsoft.

I kind of said the same thing during feedback after last tournament. If not ALL, maybe a community voted reveal of one-two players (each day). Only those that have been eliminated of course. I agree its hard to have that feeling after a lot of games have been played. And it adds a bit more drama ( in the traditional sense) every day.

Thanks for the input so far everyone! In regards to players spoiling their identities throughout the tournament, they will forfeit 50% of their prizepool funds if they do so this time. I'll also be speaking with them all about it personally. It's really down to the character of the players in this community beyond that and we thankfully have stand up individuals as pro players. I'm confident we'll be fine.

Revealing player identities each day was discussed, but I feel like this removes the hype a bit. For example in HC1 Vivi was out in Round 1 however in Round 2 onwards people were thrilled to think Vivi was still alive and well when someone went for a messy forward. The same happened with DauT, Yo, and others throughout the tournament regardless of when they exited. Also revealing each day eliminates some of the fun guessing contests I have planned. I totally understand the points being made about revealing and just how difficult it is for viewers to remember player identities. It's a unique event and it's going to feel different for both players and spectators.

Please consider inviting 12 players and letting the other top 4 players qualify, otherwise it seems a bit pointless to even include a qualifier.
The first Hidden Cup was invite only mainly due to efficiency, but I don't believe invite only is fair. There are enough high level players in the community who can compete. For a pro player to be very talented and then just not be invited to a big money event is sad to see, and I wanted to avoid that from happening here. This way everyone can make it in. I recognize ELO alone as a deciding factor might not be ideal, but it's better than the alternative which is choosing players myself. Plus in a 16 man event ELO isn't as "unfair" to qualify by as a 32 man event, especially including the qualifier. Qualifiers take quite some time to run, which is why having more of them was ruled out. It is also important to me that the event doesn't lose it's spark halfway through by running weeks and weeks of qualifiers and sets with the same maps and settings.

Would it be possible for voobly to provide us a lobby where commanda like /ping dont work? I really like the idea of hidden ping, and it would be great to hide it everywhere.
I'm trying to make this a reality, nothing is concrete yet.

This is nice and all, but, would you change everything about the event just to fit my fancy?

TY in advance.

Thanks for the reply. However, having 4 players qualify does not mean you have to have 4 qualifiers of a few weeks each - a single elim going into double elim where the top 4 (out of 20) players qualify can work just as well.

IMO it would balance out the elo issues a bit.

How can i cheer for my favorite players if i dont know who is playing? wtf? --> no tension at all...
Can u plz delete the "hidden" aspect, so we can see who is playing. Would be a much better tourney.

"Hidden Cup 2 is completely open for casters." - This is really nice!
You mean un-Hidden cup

To the point, the whole point of hidden-cup is to have that unknown factor for both players and viewers. It's a different playing and esp viewing exprience than say NAC/KOTD/ECL.

Grab pop-corn, HF.

I was going to post the same. If not 4, atleast top2.
Just 1 person qualifying seems to harsh on other N players trying to out-duel.

But Kudos to the whole effort and esp getting MS engaged actively in AOE.
I may have missed, but shouldn't the "re" rule be "save" and not "resign"? (or is that not possible due to special MOD)

And completly ignoring ECL, which by-far the the most complete/professional series, with a HUGGGGE Microsoft backing.

I take it was a miss

I think he was just mentioning the ones organized by solo casters and not by a company (or group).
___

Now we need a cup from @OrnLu528 , with scout/camel-scout replaced by a hunting wolf and lots of wolf based maps and a @Turkman 's own cup where all the food in the maps are animals/hunts (BBQ) and there is gold for days (TURK).

Yeah I totally didn't ignore or forget, I was more focusing on the relatively short events hosted and organized, as you said, by solo (and active) casters.
