How are the 128 players of the silver league determined? Highest Rank + dropped players from gold league? Or some kind of open qualifier? Or a mix?

What happens if a top player cannot participate in a season? Can he rejoin his league in the next season or does he has to grind up from silver league?

Silver will probably be seeded by some form of ladder ranking as it's intended to give players an opportunity to grind/earn their way in.

If a player pulls out of a season they will have to work their way back up through qualifiers -> Gold -> Platinum.

It's the same as any other ranking method. I'm not against ATP rankings, but it's bad to use them entirely for any tournament. Same as with ladder rating, ATP, previous performances - inviting part of the players based on it is fine and good solution (in this particular case top 8/12/16), inviting all if it's such a major tournament is a horrible idea. I'm hoping there will be some other way to get into the tournament.

I don't think 20k invitational tournament for 24 players is good. Sorry. And there are many good things like Gold + Silver League, T90's events are always well covered, greatly organized, etc. There are many things to be hyped for, but full Invitational event is just bad and I thought we're long over it regarding S-tier events.

Personally, I don't see how its very different from a 64 player (top 64 seeded from ATP in this case) single slim bracket where top 32 earn prize money, and I dont think there would be many complaints about that sort of event.

In both cases x number of players get to participate, based on a relatively arbitrary system. In one of them more would be able to contest prize placements, but the other more players are guaranteed to earn something, and has a flatter distribution.

I don't think what you are describing as "inviting" is what most people do

I respect the effort put in Gold League, but it's not on the same level, it's simply a B league without the very best. So S tier 24 players league and A-/B+ tier Gold League without like top30 in the world. To ensure everyone who participates in those leagues gets prize money (even without winning a single game) isn't something I'm fan of either, but that's for another topic.

It's great to see top level AOE2 have a league event, regular tournaments are great, however a league is great at ensuring more regular high level competition over a span of time. It's also great to see a tournament with a relegation/promotion system, I find promotion/relegation really interesting and I am glad there is finally an AOE2 tournament with promotion and relegation.


Although, I find it interesting that every AOE2 league at the pro level has been less of a 'pure' league system - ECL was effectively a number of mini-tournaments and the T90 league seems to be basically a group stage into a knockout stage. To give these events IRL equivalents, ECL was more like a season of formula 1 (a big event every few weeks, where performance in each event is rewarded with points) and the new T90 league is more like the champions league (group stage into knockout stages).



There's not really anything in pro-level AOE2 that is similar to the football league pyramid, I don't know if that's because sponsors or tournament hosts don't think if it would be exciting enough or if there just isn't any interest in that sort of event.


Still, really excited to watch this tournament, it seems really hype!

There are 24 players seeded by a system that players can't affect anymore. That's basically invitational, the only difference is that players have to sign up themselves and like seed 25-28 might get in too, depends on the interest. I'm not defending ladder rating as it has major issues, but it would allow players to get there, right now you're saying which players will get in and which players won't.

There has to be a starting point for this league. Utilising a neutral ranking system, that has collated data on the top players performances in assorted tournaments over the past years, seems like a pretty balanced system to establish the top players. It's realistically the only viable solution. Sure you could do an open qualify for top 200 players. Top 24 go into the Platinum, Next 24 into gold and so on. But do you then seed players in that tournament? If you are how do you seed them? (That is ignoring the time constraint with spot of winner being guaranteed a place in RBW)

At least using the ATP ranking system it's 1 season where you use it. After that there's opportunity to get promoted (or relegated), so in theory, the longer it goes on the more it will be the fairest reflection of who the best players are and that'll be reflected in the leagues they end up in. I could understand the complaints more if it was a one-off tournament league. But it's meant to have longevity.

There was actually a try to make this happen in CZ/SK community. The idea was 6 leagues, each with 10 players, each league players of similar elo play. Winners of each league would go up next season, losers drop down. While the league was succesful overall with quite a high level production for the Semifinals/Finals each season, it wasn't possible to make it in a way like a League with advancing. Some players couldn't play next season, few new players with high level joined - it wouldn't make sense to make them play vs 11x players when they were 16/2k, etc. Winners of 2nd league were still 200 points lower rated than 'loser' of 1st league and switching them would impact quality of both leagues.. Kind of a 'reccurring' tournament definitely has better chances of keeping the format, but I think it still needs to work like top12 from last season invited, remaining 12 qualifier.

Using ATP rankings would be fine if majority of tournaments were open qualifiers as opposed to in our scene where many past tournaments have been invitational. So the rankings become a self fulfilling prophecy.

The chances of player #25 placing top 4 in Platinum League is effectively 0%.
Players like Bruh and Babaorum are great players, but the chance that they beat Viper/Lierrey/Hera/Yo to win a RBW spot is infinitesimally small. So no one losing a realistic chance to qualify, and using ladder ranking is a horrible idea
