Voobly will be able to lock the SQ/MQ setting if they choose. AoE2:HD has MQ forced on without an option to disable it, at the moment. As for Starcraft 2, they call it MBS (multiple building selection). In the end, there's no need to change anything for the sake of change, and that's why it was made optional, just like the max-age settings, relics victory condition, grouped team player placement, etc.
The bold parts are the same concept as MQ: http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Multipl ... _selectionMultiple building selection is a UI mechanic in StarCraft II. It enables a player to select multiple buildings.
The buildings can be put into selection groups. The player must push a button to create each individual unit from the group of structures. This applies even to zerg larvae. Terran buildings with attached reactors will go into their own subgroup. Each structure will show how many units they are creating or (in the case of zerg hatcheries), how many larvae are available. Units will be produced at the structure with the shortest queue.
