Announcement

Age of Empires II is still alive, well and good - and with Christmas upon us, what better gift could we ask for than another Age of Empires II event. We are particularly excited to start the new year with a bang of a tournament - the Wandering Warriors Cup hosted by T90Official and Dave.
The Wandering Warriors Cup is a 1v1 tournament that will span across five weeks and will feature a fantastic arsenal of unique and exciting maps - all themed around nomad and transport starts.

Due to the nature of the tournament settings, we can already guarantee that the games will be absolutely incredible, chaotic and unpredictable. No game will be the same as players will settle their town centres differently with each generation and transport units in all directions.
The tournament will feature one massive single-elimination stage, holding up to 128 players. This means that every game, every minute and second, will matter for the players as one mistake can be the difference between advancing or elimination.

The Wandering Warriors Cup will feature a grand prize pool of $25,000.00 sponsored by Microsoft.
The tournament can be watched on two different platforms on the two official channels:
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/t90official/
Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/dave_aoe

Looks amazing. Extra point for allowing the players to play games during multiple days period instead of picking times for them to play. I was really scared I'd miss this event due to having some weekend days on January blocked. Dunno why we went for the standard that games had to played on exact time, but I do appreciate your approach, thank you!

Always here to watch AOE2 events, thanks T90 and Dave.

Btw, we need 8 players diplo tournament with similar settings, I don't know how it is possible without cheating, may be hidden identities. but man I would definetely watch those greedy pro players stab each others back for money.

I just scrolled through the registration page - So many pros still missing (e.g. Viper, Hera, Lierreey, Yo, Mbl, Daut, slam). Does anyone know if some of them mentioned that they will not participate?

It's great to see pretty much all the experts sign up and also good to see some old pro's return like Garyyyyy, Fedex and Hasan.
it's kind of a shame that we've used the ladder rating for seeding, especially in a single elimination tournament like this and with the ladder being not very active at the moment.

We now most likely will get Hera vs Yo in the Ro16 and the winner of that against TheViper in the Quarterfinals. JorDan will likely play against Liereyy in the Ro16, which is a real shame. There's so many methods to use to seed players, like aoe-elo, the document robo made or use tournament results similar to how Memb did for KotD4. They're all flawed in some way, but they're miles ahead of using the ladder rating.

On the other hand, who wants to see all the same matchups in every single tournament?

the players who are active in the ladder are partly keeping the aoe2 scene alive. Would be great to see e.g. Sitaux going far in this one. Who would say that he doesn’t deserve it?

also, the settings of this one are very different from previous tournaments. Why should results of previous tournaments play a big role with seeding?

I don't dislike the ladder method - you are inactive - you end up with a worse seeding, I see it as a kind of punishment for not playing the game : )

Indeed, but it can also be punishment for the one who plays the game, consider Villese being no1 seed and facing Viper in first round, because he is unseeded.

Exactly, having an inaccurate seeding means it's going to be more random, not better for people who have a seed that's higher than they should have. Seed 10 could have a way easier route than seed 1, so how is that fair for the people who did grind and got a good seeding?

I want to see the best players reach the furthest in the tournament, if that means the same people make it, so be it. This isn't the case though as we've seen in recent tournaments and plenty of other people can make it far into a tournament. It just sucks when they get far only because they played against worse opponents, while someone else got eliminated because they had to play Viper or Liereyy in the first round.

And ladder rating is 90% based on arabia and close to 0% on any of the maps that are in this tournament.
I don't mind if you used another metric to seed the players if you think previous tournaments don't give the most accurate seedings, but I don't think there are any.

Ladder seeding is probably the best option outside the top players. For top players ladder seeding doesn't reflect the real skills, so the seeding doesn't punish or reward good placement in the ladder that well. And when the tournament is single-elimination bracket, it is somewhat problematic. In this tournament same kind Swiss group stage what was in KOTD4 could have been useful.
