RAGE FOREST 3​

It's FINALLY here! We are extremely excited to announce the third edition of the highly anticipated Rage Forest tournament, a Black Forest team game tournament, featuring 16 Team Captains who draft from over 200 players in a unique draft system, all competing for a $10,000 prize pool!

Rage Forest 3 will take place over the entire month of April 2022 featuring single elimination best of 5 4v4 team games on the best team game map ever – Black Forest!

There will be 16 teams, each comprising of 6 players: 1 Tier 1 Captain, 1 Tier 2 player, and 2 players from Tiers 3 and 4. Every match will be played with at least one tier 4 player in the squad.

Prize Pool​

The total prize pool for this tournament is $10,000 which will be divided as follows:​

First place team: $5,000​

Second place team: $2,500​

Third place team: $1,500​

Fourth place team: $1,000​

I have to say this is probably a perfect team game tournament, it has the right mix of everything. Incorporating lower level players while keeping the top players serious enough and the settings (starting with the map) lends itself so well for that to happen.

It is $10k and "notable players", but I guess Liquipedia staff didn't find it prestigious enough for S-tier (https://liquipedia.net/ageofempires/Liquipedia:Notability_Guidelines#Tiers_guidelines).

Including "lower-rated" players might be the reason I guess, as it's not a "true top-top level tournament" this way.

The volunteer editors (not staff) agreed that the primary reasoning is the team draft format.

It actively excludes a lot of Asian players who do not speak fluent English and don't know the western community (who happen to make up a large proportion of 'expert' players), and it forces players to not play with their friends/teammates so can discourage them from signing up (TheViper, likely Hera & Liereyy).

As for the event being announced as S-Tier, afaik no one asked the editors before making that announcement. Tourney Organizers don't decide what Liquipedia tier their events are, the editors do, based on guidelines linked above, and discussions in the discord.

I've heard about this in the Rubenstock stream, when he and Villaims were discussing about it.
It's not that they aren't included, it's moreso that the Chinese players won't play unless it's with other Chinese players, probably due to language issues.

I mean if chinese players would sign up, wouldn't the only one picking them be other chinese players so probably they would get into a team anyway.
Also World Cup seems way more excluding to me but I think we already had that discussion so I will shut up^^

Exactly the point, they are excluded because they cannot communicate with their teammates. If it was a normal tournament where you sign up with your own team of 4-6 players, I am pretty sure WWP would have a team, and likely 1-2 full Vietnamese teams as well, not to mention the possibility of other teams from the region, or other regions where English isn't widely spoken.

Hasn't Lierrey and Viper already signed up?

I'm pretty sure Viper has said he is much less interested in playing if he can't play with his GL mates and hasn't signed up. It seems Liereyy has signed up, so that's my bad for not checking. Hera hasn't signed up though he said he would play in major AoE2 tournaments, so make of that what you will.

Assuming that Yo was a captain, that is likely, but doesn't that give them an unfair advantage as they get to use a premade, fully-fledged team with years of experience playing together, while all the other teams have to figure everything out fresh?
Especially with the varying abilities of players as captains, see MbL not even showing up for the draft in Rage Forest 2, or (no offense intended) ACCM/BacT, I can't see them drafting the strongest of teams as they likely don't know enough of the players to gauge their skills accurately beyond rating, or having the English skills to plan/lead a team.

I think what I said in the discord was, if it were $50k, it would be an automatic S-Tier imho, anything below that needs to be discussed.

One top player (DauT) being excluded, vs up to 10 (rough estimate) Asian players having an extreme disadvantage isn't really a comparable situation imho.

Again, if you disagree with this, the place to discuss it is in the Liquipedia discord among the editors.

I personally don't really care about the arbitrary category of a tournament, if its fun, its fun, if not, then not, the rest rarely affects my enjoyment of the event, so my post was not some kind of "attack" against the liqui-team for their decision.

I know you're trolling but I'll bite.

Currently, there aren't even 160 sign-ups, so I don't see how 160/200 can be playing. Not even considering a decent portion of sign-ups are <2k players who are not in the top 200.
