I find it boring they are used THAT MUCH. It cuts out a lot of the strategy aspect if both teams/players have the same set of civilizations, and takes of some fun as well (exact same civilizations fighting each other when you have soooo many different combinations...).
It's not like AoC - most long-date players will agree - is a poorly balanced game either. They will agree there is rarely a 100% civilization win, the issues come much more from uneven map generations for instance.
I would crave to see in 1.8k+ multiplayer and even more tournaments, settings with half random civs, half hidden/mirror...
instead of 2/3 mirror, 1/3 set civs ALWAYS seen in current big TG tourneys.
It would be exciting as hell. And with very good players, blaming your own civ for losing will be - rightfully so - seen as an hypocrite attitude. Random civs is just vanishing from pro players play/big tournaments which is very sad.
The issue with WiC going in later stages full Plumes/Mangudai/Paladins + Viking sling is not a balance issue, but a matter of settings. It has to change from top. Thus, I hope next tournament will bring out random again, or we will make a generation of pro AoC players who will plainly refuse to play unmirror games...
