Many improved a lot during DE, like op swede ganji, but I think its fun to see how good the best pure DE player managed to get

he undoubtedly started before 2020 as if you check his aoe2.net profile, he played as soon as DE was released in 2019. If he had no AoE2 experience before DE then he likely had a lot of experience in another RTS otherwise his rise would be really unprecedented since he reached the top ~2-3% of DE within a matter of months

I talked with him on memb's chat once and if im not mistaken, he told me I started with DE release/covid and I was shocked to hear that as well

Don't think so. If memory serves me he picked it up in the winter of 2019/2020 during the sc2 offseason. Got just good enough to get clapped by the likes of Hera on ladder a couple of times and compete in a few OGN events.

For the 2020 AOElympics registration (early June 2020), Margougou had a 1784 1v1 rating (1821 highest), so he definitely was far from his current level at that time. I believe someone talented and very active could go from new to ~1800 in ~6-7 months if he started at the release.

Solara and Salsiosetto (probably misspelling it) are others to add the the list. Both have been 2k1/2k2 recently and started after DE's release.

Seems others know about DE players where I don’t, but I can mention a few things about the other platforms. At least the first names that come to mind. I also think these questions are hard cause there’s always some history where a player only did campaigns for years or clowned around before getting serious and wanted a high rating etc, but anyway.

HD player: Metal comes to mind. Heard he started on HD and was really good. I also thought I heard Tatoh was an HD player too? Unsure about Tatoh though.

Voobly player: Viper takes the cake with that one. I don’t know if the interview exists, but when he was in RVK there was one where he talked about his rise to the top. It was sometime in late 2009/2010 when he started I believe.

IGZ player: Riut but this is very questionable since he was playing campaigns early and had a lot of breaks. All I remember is his name was slowly coming around during end of Gamepark/dawn of IGZ (exact time is hard to remember). He caused some talk on forums which was lovely. No player was ever so hyped up imo except perhaps Liereyy from what I hear. Either way, definitely the first.

Gamepark players: Actually two or three come to mind that came out of nowhere. There’s Ding (Chan_Ka_Qing), Kyo (Clot), and I believe Feeling. The thing about these guys though, is I always heard Asians played on Chinese zone before going to the “main platform”, so they were already good. All of those were some of the first “newcomers” to be able to win vs Chris at his prime and all of which were included in his famous legion forum post.

As for zone/gameranger, who knows tbh. I can’t even guess as I was never around during zone (maybe Funito knows) and never was on gameranger. Or actually didn’t 8th wonder come from gameranger? Either that or he’s one of the first few I recall making fun of it.

I watched aoe youtube videos for like 5 years before i overcame the lazyness to install and setup voobly.

It really doesn't shock me that you could follow one (1) aoe stream in 2016 (we're not even sure he was watching it regularly anyway, follow doesn't mean watch, and he only started to follow aoe2 streams en masse when DE came out), and start playing only in 2019 when the game becomes easily accessible. It actually sounds just logical.

Nah, TatoH started playing long time before HD. I recall him being already 2k or 2k2+ like 2012. But out of the top players, he was the only one that was actually playing HD quite a bit (about the same as on Voobly). Everyone else from top100 just stayed on Voobly pretty much and only played HD in Escape tournaments.
