Trapping units with 1 gate

So i was watching terrors stream when i saw this happening:

I went into my scenario editor and figured out that its actually very reproducable 11.
So yeah here i have a video showing whats going on and how you can do it.
I have not tried it in a real game yet but its 100% possible. Might post some clips when i get to it.

DISCLAIMER it does not work on villagers, they can attack the gate and leave. but it DOES work on units

Looking into this briefly...
Gates use the "annex" system, which let's the game essentially turn multiple buildings into a single building (similar to how Town Centers use separate buildings to represent the walkable and non-walkable parts).

In the original game, as you might remember, the "corners" of diagonal gates were not present while they were being constructed. You couldn't quick-wall with a diagonal gate, since units could still walk over the corners. (You could still build additional walls or other buildings on top of the corners to prevent units from walking over them, though). The middle part of a diagonal Gate is a 2x2 square, and the corners are simple 1x1 squares.

Also, in the original game, you cannot construct a diagonal Gate by having a Villager work on these corner pieces, they only build the Gate in the middle 2x2 square.

In DE this "bug/feature" was changed so that the corners of a Gate foundation no longer are passable. But this has the side effect that Villagers now can be tasked to the 1x1 corners of the Gate in order to construct them. But since these tiles are separate buildings, the game doesn't seem to check that the middle 2x2 square has a unit on top of it. The Villager still can construct from the corner, even when something is in the middle.

So the unit stands in the right spot in the middle 2x2 square, the Villager starts building in one of the 1x1 corners, and the unit gets trapped once the Vil starts constructing the foundation.

It's also possible to build on units in the "opposite corner" (but it seems they can walk away there).

And if a unit is standing in a corner and your Villager starts constructing on the middle 2x2 square (instead of the opposite corner), then the unit seems to walk off of the corner piece, like it was a Wolf walking off of a Palisade wall.

First example of an ingame succes, very usefull in this case since it allowed me to use the vill to finish my wall before his archers came in.

Maybe, it is definitely is not an intended feature and should not be in the game.
But i personally hope they do not (obviously 11), it is something that is very hard to pull of and can be both really strong but also really titanic (trust me i know 11). I would not see this breaking a game but give you a lead at most for something risky and hard to do. Just quickwalls itself in general is still way more broken then this.
But yeah opinions differ there and if it gets patched i completely understand it.

Imho villagers are mostly economic units, for sure they can fight back to defend themselves (Incas and Spanish excluded), but to be able to make a Drush completely useless with one single villager in early ages by using a bug should not be possible. It gives them too much (indirect) military strength/influence.

Yes that was my initial thought aswell but in practice you have the fact that the eagle/scout will be trying to block your villager making it almost impossible to pull off. On top of that even IF you somehow align the entire drush and trap it you still have to repair a gate, which costs a lot!, to keep them trapped.

Dont get me wrong i think it can still be very powerfull because you can still hit it with an archer or convert it with a monk stuff like that. But the amount of things that will have to be just right is a lot.

Just for clarification, does the unit you want to trap have to be in the two diagonal tiles, or any of the 4 in the 2x2 square? Also, thanks for sharing derp!

@Chainsaw The two diagonal tiles seems to be the ones where the unit has to be but i think they just need to be in there with their hitbox so around the edges it also seems to work.

nice bug you found. now it's up to the devs to fix it. anyone using this in tournaments should be banned, bug using has no place in competitive play

If they need to attack the gate before walking off, maybe attacking switches the type of Villager they are (e.g. from a Builder to a Villager), and when they get replaced they no longer are stuck.
