I agree, shift key is really important. If i would ever customise my keys, i would probably do like that- put the new hotkeys near left shift.

1.On water-maps,build a dock at the back of your island and place fishtraps around it so even if your island is castle-dropped,you'll have a food source.
2.In chokepoint maps like black forest,where most fighting will be around the opening,place castles near the front of your base for defense and then place siegeshops and place barracks behind them,archery ranges behind them and stables behind them.This way,the slowest and longest creation units are in easy access of the battlefield. In this way, depending on speed of the units you can place production buildings so that all units can come to fight at once.
