With the new X-Patch being released, it got me thinking about balance issues in the game. My most main recent concern has been about halberdiers. While their upgrade cost is on the expensive side with the not-so-modest 600 gold, the cost of the unit upgrade however imo is not so much the problem.
I think that halbs should have a separate upgrade at the barracks. Their attack bonus, vs cavalry, and particularly vs elephants, is very high. If you factor that into an early imperial game, the moment a player gets halbs, they become quickly and almost too op vs early imperial cavalry in numbers, on account of their attack bonus automatically being given to the unit when the upgrade is researched. It is my opinion that generally most of the changes made with the X-Patch are great, but my one concern that keeps coming up is halbs. Should they get a tech that increases their cavalry and/or elephant attack bonus, a tech like squires to be researched at the barracks (before the tech, their attack bonus may be halfway or almost completely reduced?)? How many other players agree/disagree with this? Thoughts?
*If nothing else*, I would like to see a tech for a boost of attack bonus vs elephants. A player sinks so much into elephants, and they can already be so handily countered by monks, shouldn't the player vs eles have to adjust a little more than just spamming halbs?
