Announcement

Are you ready for the most outstanding and prodigious event in the history of Age of Empires? We have teased you enough and are now ready to reveal what we have been brewing behind the scenes. Red Bull Wololo started back in early 2020 and pioneered the use of Empire Wars in major tournaments. The fast-paced, action-packed game mode quickly took off, and we had so many incredible moments spanning through the initial Red Bull Wololo all the way to Red Bull Wololo V in late 2021. As time went on, the events only got bigger and better, and here we are, in 2022, and we are about to blow you away.
To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Age of Empires, we are announcing not one, not two, but three tournaments. You will get to experience the original game that started the entire franchise back in 1997 - the original Age of Empires. You will also get to experience the arguably most influential game in the franchise's history, Age of Empires II - originally released back in 1999. Finally, the newest edition in the franchise, the incredible Age of Empires IV.

Once again, we will go back to Castle Heidelberg in Germany for the offline event spanning from the 21st to the 30th of October. During these days, you will experience the main event of both Age of Empires II and IV as well as the finals of all three events during the last two days - the 29th and 30th of October.

But what exactly is at stake here? Well, we have a total prize of a whopping $550,000.00 distributed among the three games, as shown below.
  • Age of Empires I: $50,000.00
  • Age of Empires II: $200,000.00
  • Age of Empires IV: $300,000.00

Invitations & Qualification

Age of Empires II

For Age of Empires II, you will see the return of all the previous conquerors. Mr_Yo, the champion of the original Red Bull Wololo. Liereyy, the only champion with two victories under his belt, Red Bull Wololo II and IV. DauT, the champion of Red Bull Wololo III. And finally, TheViper, the champion of Red Bull Wololo V. These players have proven themselves to be fierce warriors and have earned a direct invitation to the main event.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in different events leading up to the main event, as well as the two open qualifiers taking place from the 20th to the 21st of August and the 27th to the 28th of August.
You can already sign up for the open qualifiers here and here.

Age of Empires IV

For Age of Empires IV, we're looking back to N4C to find our champions, and with that, Beastyqt, the winner of N4C, and Leenock, the runner-up, will already be waiting to meet everyone else that qualifies in Castle Heidelberg.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in tournaments leading up to the main event, as well as an extensive qualification event, Road to Red Bull held by EGC.
Registration and more information regarding this can be found here.

I sincerely hope we can make this one of the greatest events ever. I'm aware of the commotion there has been following the release of Age of Empires IV, but remember that we are celebrating the franchise as a whole and the incredible history our beloved games have. We can't wait to share even more details with you soon.

For streamers, broadcasters, content creators and so on - I'm not able to share much information regarding streaming policies as of right now. I'll be sure to provide more information as soon as it becomes available. Feel free to reach out to me on Discord, and I'll take note of your interest for later. I know some people have already reached out regarding this, but please do so again now that the event has been properly announced. You can reach me at Chrazini#5687, thank you.

For additional information, go to redbull.com/wololo.

Guys, do you think Viper is going to go for AoE 2 + AoE 4?

If so, personally i dont think he would have a chance of winning any, due to very strong competition. He has proven in RBW 5 that he can still beat Liereyy, but he needs to be spot on and in perfect shape to do so. A 99%-Viper wont cut it.
I dont follow AoE 4, but afaik he is not completely dominating the scene either, and I heard that Players like MarineLord, DeMuslim and The Mista are very strong.

So if he decides to focus on one game, which game should it be ?

(Ofc we all want him in AoE 2, but from Vipers perspective, which would be the smarter choice?)

Prize money wise:
AOE2, the chance of him winning in AOE2 is waaaaaaaay bigger.

Fan service wise:
AOE2, especially if he has a 1-yr contract with FB. (unlikely tho)

Career wise:
AOE2, I dont see AOE4 dethroning AOE2 in a year or so.

Unless he receives some secret offer, I dont see any reason for him to give up AOE2 for AOE4.

He already answered that question on stream. If he qualifies for AOE4 (would be the case if makes top 3 in Golden league) he stated that he would be playing both Aoe2 and 4 but with focus on Aoe2

Yeah, looking how many possibilities we actually have as opposed to years back where resources were very limited and you really could put together like one event for everyone and for some time, the timezone preference is something that is quite overdone by now with the ever-present excuses like "but they're used to it" (which they apparently aren't (who could've thought, right?), but, well, not everyone wants to say it out loud, you know how this community can be with questioning things, especially those that are supposed to be "hype" and "good vibes only," so kudos to BacT for bringing the topic up and succeeding) and others now becoming quite old and more looking like useful scapegoats for keeping the status quo comfortable for some and masking the uncomfortable reality that the tournaments are not about the players and community (as is unequivocally touted every single time), but streamers'/advertisers'/sponsors' conditions and convenience (which is understandable and is at least becoming better known and understood after years of complete naïvety), and it's basically you either accommodate, or you get nothing, because we won't get the ROI (logically a streamer wants games when he can stream them or it's useful for him, no problem, it's the business, but then, Microsoft could try and diversify (or motivate streamers to adjust their schedule), couldn't it, instead of feeding the same beast all the time - but, well, for that, they would actually have to want to do something for the community and not just biggest ROI advertising, right), and those numbers are clear (however, there's a big question of really, or if we're just living in a self-imposed bubble (that maybe well fits someone) with unused potential, especially Latin America has something to say about this, long-term).

Now to go to the dreamland where it could actually happen from the side of the tournament hosts/sponsors, with the ever-increasing (is it going to be though?) prize-pools (and their totals) it shouldn't be a high ask that if someone wants a piece of it, they should be fine not to be having constantly the best conditions at the expense of others who are already doing it and who are constantly disadvantaged and have to bite it because they have no choice really, maybe you just also don't have to be playing (or streaming?) every single tournament if it's hard for you and you think you wouldn't be able to perform (and again, the difference between full-time and having a life, and think about why the full-times are actually able to be so - if it maybe to a part doesn't have something to do with the level of focus they can commit to the game, and, well, the conditions they get playing a role - I'm not saying something like Viper wins because all the tournaments are in his time zone, but it certainly might affect some others, as BacT mentions his experience; and also that the full-timers, i.e. tournament favourites, shouldn't have that much of a hard time to accommodate, as opposed to people with work/school (I know it's not just about the top level and changing your schedule is not that easy, but it's certainly easier if you don't have life interfering, and they're mostly brought up as the counter-arguments, that you supposedly want them to play their best for the "best" tournament game quality - but somehow this doesn't necessarily apply to all others)). In the ATR posted by robo, in top 20 1v1, 10 are non-Europeans.

Considering the size and spread of the community and how everyone tries to pretend "we're going pro," and especially with tournament of this magnitude that is supposed to be some landmark and wanting the best of the best you would expect some possible level of or attempt at consideration, but it's just a confirmation, as was mentioned earlier, what the event is (which shouldn't be a surprise and I guess at least somewhat isn't as it has been talked about).

Here you have two weekends and multiple scheduled (so not always set times or so long days) tournaments to qualify through which is somewhat doable I guess, now imagine AoEIV and three months of the same starting times for 16 events every week :d And nobody involved thought it's a questionable idea that could be improved, especially when you have many top-top players non-European :d

After complaints maybe they'll adjust it somehow, so maybe you can try here for the same.

Just want to point out, that Microsoft probably has very little say in how the tournament is run, I would assume it's all Red Bull.

In that case, as I am not interested in any Red Bull products, just know them from being main sponsors of RB Leipzig/Salzburg/New York/Bragantino in football and the Formula 1 team, how popular are Red Bull products in Asia (and America)? Is their main market Europe or would it make sense for them to have streams that are more suited to East Asian viewers too?

From their website:
In terms of further expansion, Red Bull is focusing on the core markets of Western Europe and the USA and on growth markets in developing countries

I presume the meaning of the terms "core markets" and "growth markets" in this context is fairly obvious.

The original is non-carbonated and while I've never tried to drink a flat Red Bull, I'm pretty sure carbonation is the only thing making it even possible to get down, so maybe there was quite a bit changed in translation.

Btw when you Google Red Bull an announcement about this tournament shows up under the latest from redrull.com results which is kinda cool.

I preferred believing it was because Red Bull cared that much about promoting Age of Empires competition.

This is really quite a lot money. I would expect to see more reasonable split and spare some money on more online tournament of aoe2 afterwards. Especially aoe4 community is far less than aoe 2 community right now.

I just learned that Redbull bought a Vietnamese football team last year (2021) like they did with RB Leipzig, Salzburg etc. So seems they really try to take on the Vietnamese marked atm and maybe thats part of the reason they included AoE1

Just saying, AOE4 seems to be celebrated more than AOE2.
Just wondering the reason behind the decision and whether it was Microsoft influenced.
