Red Bull Wololo: Legacy - Official Announcement

Announcement​

Are you ready for the most outstanding and prodigious event in the history of Age of Empires? We have teased you enough and are now ready to reveal what we have been brewing behind the scenes. Red Bull Wololo started back in early 2020 and pioneered the use of Empire Wars in major tournaments. The fast-paced, action-packed game mode quickly took off, and we had so many incredible moments spanning through the initial Red Bull Wololo all the way to Red Bull Wololo V in late 2021. As time went on, the events only got bigger and better, and here we are, in 2022, and we are about to blow you away.
To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Age of Empires, we are announcing not one, not two, but three tournaments. You will get to experience the original game that started the entire franchise back in 1997 - the original Age of Empires. You will also get to experience the arguably most influential game in the franchise's history, Age of Empires II - originally released back in 1999. Finally, the newest edition in the franchise, the incredible Age of Empires IV.

Once again, we will go back to Castle Heidelberg in Germany for the offline event spanning from the 21st to the 30th of October. During these days, you will experience the main event of both Age of Empires II and IV as well as the finals of all three events during the last two days - the 29th and 30th of October.

But what exactly is at stake here? Well, we have a total prize of a whopping $550,000.00 distributed among the three games, as shown below.

• Age of Empires I: $50,000.00
• Age of Empires II: $200,000.00
• Age of Empires IV: $300,000.00

Invitations & Qualification​

Age of Empires II​

For Age of Empires II, you will see the return of all the previous conquerors. Mr_Yo, the champion of the original Red Bull Wololo. Liereyy, the only champion with two victories under his belt, Red Bull Wololo II and IV. DauT, the champion of Red Bull Wololo III. And finally, TheViper, the champion of Red Bull Wololo V. These players have proven themselves to be fierce warriors and have earned a direct invitation to the main event.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in different events leading up to the main event, as well as the two open qualifiers taking place from the 20th to the 21st of August and the 27th to the 28th of August.

Age of Empires IV​

For Age of Empires IV, we're looking back to N4C to find our champions, and with that, Beastyqt, the winner of N4C, and Leenock, the runner-up, will already be waiting to meet everyone else that qualifies in Castle Heidelberg.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in tournaments leading up to the main event, as well as an extensive qualification event, Road to Red Bull held by EGC.

I sincerely hope we can make this one of the greatest events ever. I'm aware of the commotion there has been following the release of Age of Empires IV, but remember that we are celebrating the franchise as a whole and the incredible history our beloved games have. We can't wait to share even more details with you soon.

I dont give a damn for AoE4 but it's sad that Lida is once more sidelined in an event where he could fit in both games and he done a lot for both games.

Does anyone know what the plan is regarding the split between AoE2 and AoE4?
I'm guessing Pigeon and Drongo will only do AoE4 while Memb and T90 will only do AoE2 and then Nili and Dave do both?

No AoE 2 from 26-28.?
An old friend of mine and I are planning a vacation in Heidelberg to watch the Games. The final of Aoe2 on Saturday was not a a big deal, we can drive home on Sunday morning.
But there isn't a game from 24-28.?

 

I am glad that aoe2 and aoe4 have no overlap, big thanks to the organizers for that!

That surely is to change, there's no way Red Bull would throw away the good structure which almost everyone loved in their tournament.

RBW5 had a full week just for Aoe2. Now we have a lot of days taken over by Aoe4, therefore we don’t have enough time for Aoe2 anymore to do more than single elimination sadly

 

So sad.
We missed last year because of Covid and this year because of AoE4. I am happy for all the AoE4 Fans.
No Heidelberg this year and maybe never. But there will be other chances I believe and I hope.

 

So someone will travel over the world to get 1 set in Ro16 in the Main Event (ideally short and one sided one vs Liereyy, Hera, Viper) and then can fly back home next day. This opens:
1st) Environmental topic
2nd) Why is it LAN Event in that case?
3rd) How someone who thinks this is good idea has any responsibility?
This is simply bad. If the point since the start was that this will be Single Elimination with 16 players, because IVs block the time for any other format, then the format should've been different since the start. It would make more sense to have there 8 players with group stage, double elimination, or optimally not mix in 3 games in 1 week, cause it screws up the format for all of them. This is supposed to be the biggest AoE event so far, but it's not anymore. It's not about the prize pool, it's about the game mode, competitive maps, settings and so. Personally I view this as just next major event, likely with less importance than HC, NAC, KotD.
If I look for anything positive on that, I'm sure this is the last time IIs and IVs are played at the same time and same place. And also that there's a good chance this won't the biggest AoE II event ever in terms of prizepool and also good chance this will be the biggest IV event ever.

Well, we saw viewership of AoE IIs and IVs in the past months on twitch, in youtube videos, etc. I doubt RBW wants to have 'B-stream' with 5x more viewers than their Main does. Not when they threw 350k for the 'main game'.

He is not. This is what Lida wrote about it on twitter:

"RBWL casters were announced. Since many have been asking, I want to provide clarity: I was considered and I would have accepted, but in the end I was not included. KP and Drongo will do a great job with the others that join them for AoE4, but as for me, I won't be in Heidelberg."

Seems so. Not to say it will be bad event because of that, but I'm a lil curious if all those people "just enjoy that there will be an event" are so sure about that, I mean it still stands that having 200k event is huge and great, but there are obviously reasons to not be happy about

For example?

Since the Announcement it was clear that they would either have aoe4 and aoe2 happen at the same time (covered in different streams or some games not covered at all), or reduce the amount of games/series (since way more Players, not much more time) compared to RBW5.

Some of the biggest worries were that some aoe2 games would not be covered or stream/schedule alternating between aoe2/aoe4.
Now everyone who "only" wants to watch aoe2 can perfectly do so without any inconveniences.

 

It sucks to get eliminated first for sure but I don't know if winning is so fun either. You get to play FOUR sets in NINE days. The event for AoE2 stretches over more days than Redbull V (where you played four sets in the first four days if I remember correctly). Its going to be a long visit and a short tournament. But maybe Redbull has other things planned, lets see.

I am extremely disappointed and I really was extremely hyped for it.
RB6 devoloped into a huge disappointment

well heidelberg is not a bad place for free days between games

 

This being single elim also places an incredible amount of pressure on whoever is in charge of seeding. Can easily see that being controversial.
