Red Bull is excited to announce a new step forward in Age of Empires 2 esports, an event played entirely on the new mode Empire Wars. Check out an Empire Wars overview here

Featuring the top 8 players from Hidden Cup 3, TheViper, Hera, TaToH, dogao, Liereyy, DauT, Mr_Yo & MbL, and 8 more qualifiers, 4 from each of the two qualifying weekends, the Main Event will be an action-packed weekend of high-level innovative gameplay.

The Main Event stream will be casted by Nili_AoE, T90Official, & Dave with ZeroEmpires as the stream host.

Players interesting in playing in the qualifiers need to sign up at the Toornament pages (Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2) & join the Discord channel for easy communication with other players & Admins. Players will need to check-in during the hour before the tournament starts on Saturday to confirm their participation.

The highest I saw on Twitch was 18k.

IIRC T90 channel was 50k+ alone while the event was fully open straming

 

I rarely saw Vikings being played that weird. No Elite Berserker, no Chieftains vs mass cavaliers, but arbalesters (hahahaha, arbalesters).
Deserved loss, and I hope the one who played Vikings like this will lose against Mr. Yo.

Hc3 had a peak of 51k on t90's and 57k on all (non Chinese) channels. Is interesting how Mario Ovale drawing so much more viewers for this than hidden cup.

Honestly, the time limit is so lame. Hera tried to lame his way to win by not attacking when he was behind in g1 vs Viper, and Viper then counter lamed with just researching silly techs.

A game really shouldn't come down to this tbh.

Most sports have time limit

 

Again a stalematy no-action endgame because of timer. Hera and Viper are so close I hope most of the games of this series won't finish that way, but I have a bad feeling about this... We don't even know who won here. Nobody won, especially not entertainement and beautiful game.

This is not drama this is just stating the cold hard facts.

We really should not be so hungry to increase viewer numbers and be willing to give up the nuance of RM because of it, then to make it even worse the score win... If you want short games then do BO3. Either that or you schedule less sets per day. The greed seriously got in peoples head.

I am really not liking this quantiy over quality trend. I don't even want the community to grow like this. Then the auto scout that is a feature that requires no skill, just an added random factor that can heavily influence games. Ridiculous.

this time the time limit prevented another 30min of 70 skirms throwing spears at each other. Viper had all the map control, castles everywhere. Dont think it mattered too much.

Structurally the closest sport to a aoe series is probably tennis. Anyone want tennis to have time limit? The most glorious tennis matches in history have always been 5h+ epic battles. Imagine the 2008 Wimbledon final with a time limit set at 3h. What a letdown that would have been.

TV channel can program tennis matches even if there's no clue at how long they will last beforehand, you tell me we can't do the same on twitch where there isn't even a tight schedule to follow like for TV broadcasting

Since likely more viewers equals more sponsors equals more dollars for casters and players, I believe they would disagree :-)

Nah, if this had been about the wins, Viper could've pushed Hera all over, eagle raid, siege rams etc, as he was doing before, but with the limit it was too risky to get a bad k/d.

The game would probably have ended a bit later with the same result, but way more exciting.

Hilarious joke, nicely done. Why should there not be criticism of that putrid G1? That was not Age of Empires, that was a gross corruption of Age of Empires.

If you're going to have a time limit, I propose you get an impartial panel of three expert players to judge the better position at the end of the game and then that player is declared the winner. That way players would play properly throughout the whole game.

 

One problem with score victory, amongst with many others like how the score is very inaccurate to show which player is truly ahead at the point of time limit, is that it can actually itself be a reason why a game goes for later stages. There are situations where winning through old fashioned way is impossible and players would tap out but have chance with score. Also in case of stalemate situation where fighting under opponent castles is no no for score point reasons, games can drag out to the time limit.

How often you are seeing tennis +10 hours in row? There can be only so much matches per day

One last thing

Everyone has their favourite games in the history of age of empires 2. But one recurring theme that everybody can agree on is that the most impressive games have always been long, epic battles from dark age to post-imp with lots of comebacks etc. Why would you assume that newcomers would prefer 58min long games showing always the same castle and early/mid-imp battles? Why would you not assume that newcomers woul also prefer epic long games like you do?

If you like quality over quantity, why are you repating arguments that have already been stated and debunked 50 times throughout this thread?
Red Bull approached Nili and asked for settings like those. Nili took the opportunity and organised a great tournament. Nowhere was stated that this is a permanent change or a general trend to increase viewer numbers.
