Their aim was to conquer, destoying cities and killing all people in those cities was useful for their conquest.
The resoning for the murder or jews (and other groups) was "they are evil kill them"
There was nothing to gain from it. It did not affect the outcome of the war nor their control of the regions they had conquered.
