They do in 1.0!
The problem with lowering the gold cost of mamelukes is that this would make them overpowered in the imperial age. Currently, you have to have a roaring economy to actually mass mamelukes, but lowering the cost might give the same problem to mamelukes that Hun cavalry archers currently have.
Perhaps boosting the power of "normal" mamelukes slightly would be better.
Still, the fact that most unique units cannot be massed in the castle age is often reason enough not to use them. Some are created fast enough to mass, like chu ko nu and plumed archer, and thus are used. Others don't have to be massed, like conquistador or janissary, and are powerful enough in small numbers. But on the other hand, some have very limited scope of usability. War elephants come to mind.
much agreed, maybe if you wanna discuss things beyond FE make a new threat and put your ideas there. As for this topic maybe keep your posts to FE related.Usic, I think everyone must focus on AoFE than in future xpacs after AoFE... Cysion does not need more headaches!
I just wrote a super long response to Barbarossa et al that disagreed with gold reduction of mameluke, but it seems that this website likes to stealthily log people off when the current page is on screen for an unknown amount of time. Let me give my counter argument in brief. First, I'd like to thank those that replied to my inquiry regarding this sub-topic of mameluke cost. 5 gold off I should say is hardly comparable in scope to the OP'd nature of the 30% reduced cost Hun cav archers currently enjoy in Imperial, nor would it approach the advantage of the 20% to be implemented in FE. And although the elite upgrade itself for mameluke is fairly cheap, the elite upgrade cost for the mameluke is only part of the pie, if you want the whole thing you have to research zealotry for increased HP's, which added together with the elite upgrade = 1300 food, 1300 gold. That is not peanuts. Also, mamelukes have a lot of counters (pikes, elite skirms, mangudai, archers, onagers, champs, scorpions, etc.) and like their other camel counterparts, they do not enjoy an attack bonus vs. the cataphract. I think there should be some slight way to power up the mameluke in Castle Age, yes, such as the armor increase suggested by others, but also that gold cost is through the roof in my opinion for a unit that is not that dominant.
