Correct me if I am wrong.
theres a reason they got interested and then left to go to voobly, just sayin. tbh i bet it turned off more people than it kept, after buying that game theres probably little chance a buyer would try it again with an expansion. I mean the aofe "devs" are random nerds who made a mod that died on voobly where it actually had a platform that is amazing... the hd steam side is just about making money, nothing else, the original hd release was terrible. If microsoft wanted this to be a real franchise again they would put some real devs on it and not some random studio do some graphic updates and resell a broken game for a quick buck. microsoft got some quick easy money selling nostalgia and voobly got some players who after buying a broken game still wanted to play it.. go figure.
All I can say is I never got to participate in the multiplayer scene of aok and aoc. If it wasn't for the HD release aoc would just be a fond memory. Now, it is one of my primary games and I've logged almost 700 hours playing my favorite game.
AOCHD will have no role in that whatsoever. No one in the community asked for something like it, and no one needed it.

about 2-3 million people bought the game. not all of those were full price, but it's still a lot of people
you are delusional if you think nobody wanted a steam release
obviously they could have put more effort into it, but it's basically the same game with higher system requirements
i played on zone/gamepark/gamespy/igzones/gameranger/voobly/steam
steam is by far the biggest thing that has happened to the game since the conquerors expansion
if you like spectating, some userpatch/voobly stuff is really nice. but it doesn't translate to better gameplay
some modding has potential to fix the game, but it doesn't look like much will happen there since it's being handled very incompetently (both on the steam/microsoft side and the voobly side). the whole concept of tweaking the gameplay for "balance" and then still being forced to play mirror because the game is still incredibly unbalanced makes no sense
