When you say Captains Mode what settings will be used?
Not a real question, just a coment:
I wouldn't recomend to start a tourney on January the 1st, lots of people will have travels due to holidays till the 10th or so.
P.D. Deleted from announcing post.

Where do you have holidays in Januari? Just wondering, I guess you celebrate 3kings?

We just discussed this announcement with Marv, got exactly the same question and used the same exampleRo64: bo3
G1: Random
G2: Random
G3: mirror
So you can basically get Persians vs Aztecs twice and are out of the tournament?
I guess this sort of Pick Civ has been discussed, but (at least) two problems come to mind:game 1 –Pick from Spain, Malay, Britons, Malians, Italians
game 2 – Pick from Ports, Incas, Byzantines, Berbers, Slavs
game 3 – Pick from Chinese, Japanese, Saracens, Indians, Vikings
game 4 – Pick from Celts, Huns, Khmer, franks, Mongols
game 5 – Free pick – no civ already used (by player – e.g can pick one enemy has used)
The examples I remember was from MOA3.
You could either be Byzantines, Japanese or Saracens. Three very similar civs. They all have fully upgradeable monks (with the exception of Japanese lacking Heresy) and fully upgradeable archers/skirms/HC and decent siege. There were a few Saracens and Japanese games early on, but then it was just pure Byzantines War all the way.
The other one was where you could pick from Goth, Franks, Brits or Celts. I remember seeing Viper win as Britons against MbL as Celts and Miguel used Franks a few times against weaker players, but otherwise this ended up being an automatic Celts War, for nearly every game.
If you want people to pick from a limited selection of civs, they all have to be weaker civs or stronger civs. The moment you get a mixture, the stronger civ will end up being the only one that's used. For example, Burmese on Arena with all the monk and relic bonuses, plus the free lumber camp upgrades would be picked over almost anyone else they were pooled with.
Nice idea form Marv.G2: loser choose 2 civs out of 4 (eg. Celt, Britons, Franks, goth) will be for example Celt vs goth
G3: loser G2 decides if he wants to play Britons or franks, remaining civ for other player
will be result in 2 different games where the one who is behind gets an advanage but needs to think carefully about his choice not to end up with Brit vs goth in last game for example. can also give a pool including 6 civs for a bit more variability.
