This is an important point, especially considering recent drafts are publicly available on aoe2cm so if you are paying attention to the website a lot and players mess up you can get spoiled as well.
Have you considered giving new hero names to the players at each round? I could be wrong but I feel the point of having hidden names is that players do not know beforehand what strategy they will be facing. After the first casting day however the playstyles of the different players will be somewhat apparent, even if trying to guess exactly who is the opponent would be more difficult.
And, on a side note, I think there is a small contradiction between having hidden names and trying to find every clue possible to guess the player's name. Changing the names would at least refresh that discussion.
I don't see it in the rules but I heard T90 say that they would select the best 3 most fair servers for the pair of players and pick randomly from those. Something like that.I am posting this after some serious thinking about whether I should post this or not, Players can kind of predict who they are facing against based on the server location. Could it be solved in some way?
vast majority of Slopes games are Indians vs Britons and Britons win
Bay is Persians vs Mongols and Mongols win
Islands is Vikings/Italians vs Portuguese and Portuguese win.
Keep in mind there are now some additional maps which can throw these plans off. Example : High Tide can be a map which is good for Persians, Mudflow can be good for Indians. Also the level of play will be better so I would not expect the same type of results (like britons always winning). Not sure if the map pool for the main event has been decided yet, but I have some serious concerns about Slopes, Bay, and Islands. It seems like the vast majority of Slopes games are Indians vs Britons and Britons win, Bay is Persians vs Mongols and Mongols win, and Islands is Vikings/Italians vs Portuguese and Portuguese win.
It's going to be really boring if that's what we get over and over in the main event.
although you overlooked the Max vs. Jordan Slopes game, Robo
That is the only brit vs india slopes game that I was referring to
This has been discussed over and over so I'll just sum up the threads from HC1, HC2 and HC3 for you:I am very excited about this tournament, including about trying to guess the players - but the possibility of a random bracket throwing up a Viper vs Liereyy first round or something similar does irk me a little bit. Liereyy could conceivably lose to Viper in a final having beaten DauT, Hera, and Yo, and win $10000 but equally could lose to Viper in a first round and win 'only' $1500 - there's a lot riding on blind luck in a random draw. Obviously there's little that can be done about this given the format of the tournament (and barring robo doing some naughty bracket-fixing behind the scenes), but it does seem very unfair.
Thanks for this! I stand corrected. I must have just been reacting to recent results. We have had exactly one Indians vs Britons matchup on Slopes, and Britons won that game, out of 29 total Slopes games.
There have been two Persians vs Mongols on Bay, and Mongols won both, out of 25 total Bay games.
We have seen 7 matches of Portuguese vs Vikings or Italians on Islands, and Portuguese have won 4 of those, out of 20 total Islands games.

Data from the qualifiers is always a bit deceiving as stronger players will naturally beat weaker ones regardless, so you're right that we'll get a greater understanding on what is strong and what is not come main event time. Thanks for this! I stand corrected. I must have just been reacting to recent results.
Despite these stats I do think that these maps aren't very balanced – especially Bay/Pants and Islands. I'll freely admit that the stats don't yet back me up, but I'd certainly predict that once we have more sets between evenly matched players then civ picks and strategies will coalesce around two or three options, as they have in previous Hidden Cups. (Let's be honest, civ drafting in the first couple of qualification rounds usually doesn't matter much.)
Anyway, despite all that I do apologize for making sweeping claims I couldn't substantiate.
