So in this video you can see TheViper set up an excellent trap granted it was a somewhat fantasy game

However with the recent update of UP 1.5 of rotatable gates via scroll wheel it seems people are not too fond of traps.

Of course Viper, Slam and bean dip all like traps based on professional feedback from top players.

But what are your thoughts on trapping units via rotatable gates? Is it skill or does it ruin the game? Did age of gates really change the game? What would you do to change traps to make them more acceptable?

Are traps good or bad?

I like the idea in concept as it is very skill-intensive, but I think as a matter of risk vs. reward, the risk of going for the trap is too low. By that, I mean that palisade gates are too cheap 11

There have been several reasonable ideas for nerfing palisade gates floating around, and if/when those are implemented, I think we will be seeing traps less. For example, trapping and killing 3 militia doesn't look so "free" if it is costing you 90 wood + idle villager time.

Beyond the mere trap aspect, I think rotatable gates are a nice quality of life change for the game.

Eh, tbh you don't need any skill to trap units with gates, just a little speed. They are the worst addition to aoe.

I think traps are fun to watch from a spectator perspective, and I don't think they are too bad for actual gameplay I well. I think the much bigger problem with gates is just normal quickwalling, not necessary the trapping of units

What's there to like about multiple tiles spanning walls that can easily be used last-second to prevent unit passage, especially in feudal? They make it much less risky to be out of position with one's own army, in defensive terms, even when playing open. I wouldn't mind them being able to be built only in existing walls, for palisade and stone both, if present at all.
