That just means AoE 4 numbers will drop even harder once gamepass ends, doesn't it?While theres no doubt aoe4s hype is declining, you cant just simply compare steam numbers as its playerbase consists of way more gamepass people than aoe2.

I think first party titles stays there forever. That just means AoE 4 numbers will drop even harder once gamepass ends, doesn't it?

Ohh okay, I misunderstood then! i just assumed they were counted with steam, sorry for the confusion.I might have understood all of this wrong, but I believe gamepass players are playing through the Microsoft store and therefore are not included in the steam numbers.

it's not aoe4 vs aoe2
DE has about half the peak player base it had in January of 2021 (see below). In the last month or so it has lost players on average (~5k or so).
Aoe4 is declining in players also. If I had to guess looking at these graphs though aoe4 will have a bigger player base long-term. Of course it could be that the game just gets stale quicker. But I think we will see aoe4 with more players at least for another month or two, if not indefinitely.

It's steam charts. I thought maybe everyone has seen the webpage at least once so didn't bother. Thanks.

I just wondered why you posted a screenshot from the page from two days ago. Was a bit confused about the numbers, because they didn't match the recent numbers. But no problem at all.It shows how old in the screenshot. What's the problem?
I wonder what that should mean and if that isn't something insignificant. I could as well stateDE has about half the peak player base it had in January of 2021 (see below). In the last month or so it has lost players on average (~5k or so).
You have to define dying. The average player base might get a major hit, but won't die. The top level competition might die. In case of the worst scenarios for AoE II, I can imagine 90 of the top 100 players moving to AoE IV, meaning the remaining 10 won't have tournaments, neither enough of high level opponents to keep playing on the same basis. Therefore, in terms of the top level competition, it is literally AoE II vs AoE IV, while only 1 of the games will stay highly competitive. While it's possible that some few of the full time players might be very high in both games, competition dates might be clashing and so on, therefore it will be impossible to keep playing both games on the top level. For those who don't know, historically speaking aoe2 was supposed to die already a few times.
For some... the release of HD was aoe2 dying.
For some... the end of Huns wars was aoe2 dying.
For some... the many balance changes was aoe2 dying.
For some... the inclusion of new civs was aoe2 dying.
For some... the release of DE was aoe2 dying.
And yet every single time it grew bigger AND better.
aoe2 can grow and certainly can also go smaller in size. It can be actively developed by Microsoft like it is now, or it can be left abandoned like it was in the past, being managed entirely by its community. Many things can happen, but dying.... There are far too many old nerds like us for this game to die.
Every single time along the way it was just a change, just like life is everchanging. Accept it, embrace it, sit tight and enjoy the ride <3
I looked at the current top players of the AoE 2 ladder, because I would like to know who did not play AoE 4 or does not want to switch in the near future.
Some of them might play on a different account for the AoE 4 ladder, but so far I did not find:
MbL
F1Re
Valas
TheMax
Barles
Miguel
SongSong
BadBoy
Modri
classicpro
Zuppi
Daniel
The_Dragonstar
Hoang
St4rk
Hearttt
Whitecourt
LaN
Chris
SobeK
Mr. Bean
Lucky Rox
Noisick
Overtaken
Fedex
StrayDog
jibatong
Twigg
If you know whether any of those does play AoE 4 or has already mentioned that they want to do so in the near future, or you can add any top level player (this is just from the current top 100), please respond here.
I just want to see who potentially would "disappear" from the pro scene if all top tournaments in the near future were AoE 4 (which I don't believe).
Thank you. I was only looking at the aoeiv.net 1v1 ladder and who participated in Genesis, no streams.F1re for sure has switched. He was streaming aoe4 yesterday and even has coaching lessons setup.

Says the guy in charge of the current AoE IV events. I think within a minute, I'd google 10 similar comments from the past by people in charge of by now dead games. Saying that AoE IV will survive (we're talking high level competition) is at this point just one of the scenarios. In the long run, the better game will survive, which at this point is AoE II by a margin. However, IVs will surely go through balance and if the game gets major improvements it might survive and kill IIs. My point is, predicting the game future after less than a month and 1 medium tournament is just dumb regardless of which side you're rooting for. And there's no point in panicking (for now) as AoE II fan, neither as making power statements like 'IVs won't die'.Aoe IV is won't die. You don't need any kind of insight to be sure of that.
Yeah I was about to say, maybe not the most unbiased source there.Says the guy in charge of the current AoE IV events. No, says the guy who understands basics business. A project as huge as Aoe IV won't flop in 3 months.Says the guy in charge of the current AoE IV events. I think within a minute, I'd google 10 similar comments from the past by people in charge of by now dead games
