TL; DR Number of multiplayers seem to be roughly equal for both games, while AoE 2 seems to have a larger base of single players

This actually allows for a comparison how numbers have changed in the last month and a half ( I'm checking the numbers from today as Robo`s post is from a few days ago)

AoE2DE 37001 ranked 1v1 entries
AOE4 51536 ranked 1v1 entries
AoE2DE 179912 unranked lobby entries
AoE4 177612 unranked lobby entries

January 15th 2022
AoE2DE 38410 ranked 1v1 entries
AOE4 47673 ranked 1v1 entries (49487 according to Robo`s post from 6 days ago)
AoE2DE 172525 unranked lobby entries
AoE4 139343 unranked lobby entries (143149 according to Robo`s post from 6 days ago)

In both cases I'm not looking at ranked team games as in AoE4 they are split into 2v2 3v3 and 4v4s and we don't know how much of an overlap there is. I have noticed there is a certain lag with these numbers probably due to the fairly long period of 30 days. After the 30th of November AoE4 numbers had been increasing for a while before they started to go down, while the steam numbers always suggested decreasing numbers. A change in trends would take longer to see here. I did not write down numbers for previous dates so this is what we have.

AoE2DE has lost some "unranked" lobby players from 179912 to 172525 but has gained 1v1 ranked players 37001 to 38400.
AoE4 has lost 1v1 ranked players from 51536 on November 30th to 47673 today but almost half of this loss is accounted for in the last few days as 6 days ago the number was 49487 according to the post that Robo did in Reddit. AoE4 has also lost a pretty significant number of lobby players from 177612 to 139343.

With the two biggest streamers by far going to FB, is just incredible that sometimes AoE2 gets 3k viewers without tournaments going on.

I'm far from being an English language expert but I vividly remember the advice my Spanish teacher gave me when I wrote stuff like you did (I tend to do the same xD). She basically told me that regardless of how much of an expert you are on a certain language, a better and more intelligent communication tends to be achieved by using shorter AND clearer sentences. Specially so if your goal is to transmit a message to others rather than showing off. Following the short sentences rule is always a good start.
Although I can see how writing in a overly convoluted way is also a matter of taste. As I said I'm "guilty" of this too, to each their own.
Sorry if this is irrelevant but it seemed appropriate to me and wanted to share it. Your message totally reminded me of it.

I could have split it up into more sentences but the writing itself seems pretty clear. Didn't use any words I wouldn't expect a moderately proficient non-native speaker to know and individual clauses all say distinct things. I guess you say following the short sentences rule is a good place to start so I see where your impression is coming from. Will try to keep it in mind.

Where do we draw the line when it comes to a person being a shill? On the other side of things, how do we know if something is valid criticism or just hate? To know this you'd need to see the inner workings of the person, to see their intentions. Normally we'd state we can't see that stuff so we just guess.

To me if the only intention of a person is to see the game or human fail, then what he shares isn't criticism. He just wants to attack it regardless of everything else. There's just one goal, to feed the inner hate mechanisms. When you only get off seeing something doing badly it constitutes an unhealthy or twisted relation with the topic/person, in this case aoe4. In other instances it can be applied to DE, to a particular streamer or player, or to anything really. Feeling betrayed by streamers, being happy because they're doing badly... please give me a break . Have in mind that when you feel betrayed it is because you feel this person is doing morally reprehensible things.

I agree with this up to the point where you are implying that unhealthy or twisted relationship is the fault of the person sharing the criticism rather than the topic/person being criticized.

This feeding off negative **** could be what gives Aoezone its reputation of being a negative cesspool. Even if it's only a few doing it. Although there's also a big part of this coming from the inability of some to deal with criticism, as I've already stated many times in the past. It's easier to deal with criticism directed at you when you present it as hate.

So I can also see the other perspective in which many of us are Microsoft shills and streamer simps stopping valid criticism and therefore helping the evil ways. The magic of different perspectives ^^

This is true that it is hard to control tone just using text. I am not sure it would solve all problems but it could definitely help in some instances.

Well I just watched Dave and Jordan casting Kasva vs. saymyname game. They mentioned quite a bit how "quick" is AOE4 while Kasva holding us in a game that is lost at least 10 minutes ago.

I think it is mainly writing on forums that comes off as aggressive when it isn’t intended. If it were more like live convos on discord or along the lines, would be much different vibes.

But like I look at some of the people on here who have been called trolls or annoying, see their other posts, and they actually seem like fine folks. I would hang out with them. Like Gerry. Miss him tbh, he actually seemed like a cool guy to chill with and just talk about life or something.

I remember that thread pretty well. Some things I definitely don’t agree with.

Can’t find the whole slavery thing which actually has me a bit interested. Will have to look at another time, actually a lot of funny posts on his 2 accounts.

At the very least, I can see why you don’t have a high opinion of him, especially when he roasts you like this:

I dunno man tbh. It’s hard enough being a decent person let alone a good person. Everyone seems to have their dark secret or dark view of something. I just try to find some common ground and connect with someone, and don’t bring up certain subjects where I know bad things can happen.

I could easily ruin a 15 year old friendship just talking about religion with a friend who did some seriously big things for me during a hard time. My mom could ruin a decades long friendship over them being an anti-vaxxer that has done some very nice things for her. Unless someone felt evil to me, I never put any limit on anyone that wanted to talk to me or be my friend. Hasn’t worked out best of ways all the time, but have learned a lot. Maybe I am just plain dumb, but Gerry felt alright somewhere to me. Also at some point, gotta let people have their own opinions.

See previous quote for explanation of this. The views are abhorrent but you can tell I'm this case they're from such a place of dumbness you manage to tune them out and so more strongly notice the non bad parts.

Wouldn't call it a roast, but more something like toxic masculinity. It's hard to overcome the categorisation of "alpha male" and other related stuff. But it's complicated because it involves actual reflection of the influences of your parents, other social surroundings etc. things you don't learn in school and could just work out for yourself and/or with the support of a psychotherapy. Some people might never learn it during their life span, others a bit later, when they grew old enough. It's kind of a sad story - but that's life.

Well, you choose your friends and people that surround you. If that's your approach, that's the way you are doing it. It's your personal preference of people that surround you.
Me, personally, I wouldn't spare out critical topics or being afraid to lose friendships over this. People come and go, ways of life intersect each other and lead to different goals. In the end it's who you feel fine with and where your personal borders are and how strict you apply them.

That said, I defined my borders relatively close to my own belief of what I think is acceptable to do and say myself and apply it to others. This way I actually surround myself with people that I like for what they are, what they do, what they say. Disagreement for sure still happens, but we at least know, that our basis is the same and the rest can be discussed. A person shunning someone for not being built like a bodybuilder, thinking slavery was a viable approach to labour, anti-vaxx (in the sense like being too dumb to make research on a topic and just be against something without any knowledge) and other stuff is definitely not someone I would surround myself with.
