I cant say I am really happy, because there are some problems I see. First is so many spectators who doesnt play - it is almost 1/2 players who are in room but dont play - in my opinion there should a limit which can be determineted by host. I think it is ok, if there are 10-15 players as spectators in room, but why 50, 70, 100? You can always watch that game as a record game.
It linked with another problem - not possibility to get a game. Frankly, I am not alone who waits like 30 minutes or one hour for a game. Everyone is spectating or he is just scared of 3-4 friends maybe? I am not sure, but it seems so and it doesnt have to be team of 4x 2k players. A player just see that there are 4 friends so he cant come and try to win. Scared of his 1700 rating?
I dont say it if it would be waiting for Arena which we play mostly, but noone comes even for maps which were played a lot and still are. BF, LN, Ara, FR - where do you see that problem, that nobody comes?
And last problem is about tournaments - there are still tournaments with new map packs as someone mentioned. But most of community cant play these maps - half of it plays BF, so why there is no BF in these big tournaments - 1v1 BF is really boring, but 4v4 or 3v3 would play everyone, everyone who you think about plays BF, maybe except SY and Tyrants.
Sorry, it wasnt last problem for me, last problem is, why Carlos has conq as profile picture...
This spectator phenomenon is a huge issue which no one seems to realize yet. You didn't even mention the guys online but are watching streams
The other major problem is now NPL. If you are 1500-1650 rate in MS, it's easier to get a game in NPL lobby. So getting a 1650-1700 TG in MS is now becoming harder compared to how easy it was a few years ago.
There is no incentive for anyone to ever leave NPL, as long as you just stay under 1700 MS rate (according to a few mods), you can play there forever.
MS and NPL seem to have the same number of players most times, but NPL has maybe 1-3% spectators while MS can have 10-15% spectating depending on the time of day/who is playing. To me, this is an example of the difference in mentalities between just wanting to play vs being scared to lose rate or wanting to spec.; there can be more to this, but I think this is a major part of it.

It seems sad to mirror when you have 17 or 2 2others to play against, all of which will lead to games that are much more fun to play and watch.
Well I can understand how you feel, but it's still an overall improvement over the huns ara/vike FR that we used to only see; lesser civs can be seen in mirror mode now.
Mirror is definitely more beneficial to TGs than it is to 1v1, while random is basically too unfair to use in most cases. Until the game gets a basic patch for balance, and not anything over the top, we won't see other civs used so often as they just don't compare to top 5 civs.

Exactly
Sadly it's become "why would I play football when I can just watch pros play it on TV? "
