AOFE's last update wasn't as good as I hoped for, and I still dont have any idea what changes they are considering at the moment.
Dear Rambit,Just to repeat my logic in thinking FE wont be compatible with aoe 2 HD:
In order for FE to add new civs it needs to use Userpatch. Userpatch is an executable file which is built on top of the C patch. If you were to replace the AoE 2 HD executable file with it you would lose all of the new features including match making as they will be in the executable file.
Having said that, the maker of UP posted that he thinks it will work, so maybe he knows something we don't.

As HD developers have hinted that they will reveal additional information later on. Hence, I think we can assume that they will consider AOFE as possible upgrade for expected HD version. I think, we all are eager to hear that aofe will be included into that package. At lenght, I think the best option would be aofe on HD. The 1.0c is the history, now it's time to proceed on AoFE which was developed by community and it's utmost balanced. Steam provides has a good foundation of gameplaying. We've gotten back when aoe was on zone and I am glad to witness reincarnation of zone times. We all hope for having aofe on HD.
Best Regards,
Chip
While it is possible they plan on implementing some UP and/or FE features, I don't think it would be likely. This from a dev of AoE 2 HD:Dear Rambit,

The mechanics and balance from 1.0c should be expected.
The option of AoFE merged with the aoe 2 HD? The whole purpose of this topic was to see what people would prefer IF that was not possible. I stated it as a hypothetical question as I expected people would have different opinions on the likelihood of it being possible.Well, assuming that you read aoe forums makes your reply pointless, because forums doesn't unveil the progress going beyond by programmers. I am convinced that Cysion is negotiating over this topic. Merging aofe and HD, seems to be the best option. Therefore, I am urging Rambit to add it into his poll.

Get unconvinced Chip... cysion can at best hack the exe not create new game rendering engine... I am convinced that Cysion is negotiating over this topic.

+9999!Ideally, it would be AoFE HD, but as of now, I'm going to choose AoFE over the other two any time of the day, because it's farrr more balanced. And more historically accurate, because right now I just can't see Mongol ECG's, Hunnic cannon galleons, Hunnic stone walls, and Squire-less Franks the same ever again.
We announced last night that FE is now rated on Voobly. Did you not see that or are you referring to something else?+9999!
Aoe2 HD is just aoc with better terrain and water.I'm not saying its bad but when compared to AOFE,it pales. No balance fixes with Hun OP with cheap CAs and Franks the worst civ.Ideally,I would choose AOFE+HD but if that wasn't possible, definetly AOFE with Gr or Voobly or singleplayer.Voobly needs to get its act together.Really, why be so stubborn to AOFE when Steam could take away(at least a small number of) players?
But isn't that the Voobly version without the new patch? If not really sorry, should have been more attentive to the forumsWe announced last night that FE is now rated on Voobly. Did you not see that or are you referring to something else?+9999!

+1 One of the main intent of MS going on steam is to provide a sandbox environment where users can modify the games in its rightful boundaries.. I have 0 doubts in my mind that AOC HD II will be immensely popular. How do you compare a gaming client which has 400k users vs 1000 on voobly at best?I would also like to add that Steam is a great platform for multiplayer gaming and I assume that hundreds of thousands of copies of AoE HD will be sold; considering that at any time of day there are at least 4,000,000 steam users logged in. How exactly the multiplayer will work is yet to be seen... I have my doubts that it will be as refined as Voobly when it comes to ladders and statistics but I do believe that we shouldn't judge it until we can see how it works ourselves. It's very easy for developers to update their products after release using Steam which means that updates and fixes can be applied later on and if there really will be official support then I expect we will see this.
