Hello dear AOC community,
I would like to drop a concept here. I thought about this for a while now. Since i watched a lot of streams i know that there are diehard AOC players out there who like to give in to the addictive nature of this game... i would like to propose the idea to have an AOC marathon!
How could this work?
We start with 8 players who think they will like to try playing 24 hours straight. (or drunk, whatever they like)
Because this can not be a knock-out tourney, it must be about gathering score.
So, the contenders will play on a wide variety of maps, gathering score. After every game, the players score is added to its total. This results in a ranking list.
Every game teams are re-mixed, so that teams are evenly balanced (score-wise). FFA games can be played too. Alliances can be made to tackle score-leaders. Play it dirty, if you want, its about survival!
The goal is to keep playing, gathering score. Between games there will be just a short pause to update the ranking, and remix the teams for the next game. Players have to keep playing, or they are out of the event. They are free to resign from the event if they can not play any longer, or dont feel like winning it. The event will continue with the remaining players.
Some pausing can be done after every 6 hours, by playing two 2v2's for instance, where half of the players can have a break.
So, this can be won in 2 ways: either by have top-score after 24 hours, or by being the last one standing if all others give up.
It would be cool if the entire thing would be streamed. I am not able to sponsor anything, but if i could, i might do it. I can imagine contenders would like to earn a price, like 800-400-200-100-50-30-15-0.
I am not sure if there are players who would like to accept such a challenge, and when it would best be scheduled. First of all, i am curious how people think about this...
Scheduling
It would be preferred to have 8 contenders with about the same skill level. Maybe between 1800-2200 Voobly rating. However, this is a discipline in its own, so it could happen that unexpected winners can emerge. It is preferred that all contenders can communicate in english, to make the varying team setups fair.
Also, all candidates should be able to find a day (or two) they can all free up for this. Interruptions will be detrimental.
Scheduling will best take place at some holiday, like in the pentecost weekend (13-16 May 2016). I dont want to get in the way of other ongoing tournaments however.
Target
Play your best to get the highest score overall. Disadvantage your main rivals. Take your opportunities and work together if it benefits you. Or even lame your allies. Think 24h strategy.
Teaming
- 1st game: to start setting a ranking, i think of an FFA Arena game. I hope this will give all players a chance to do their thing.
- 2nd game: 2v2v2v2, teams (#1+#8) vs (#2+#7) vs (#3+#6) vs (#4+#5), map type ?
- 3rd game: 4v4, teams (#1+#3+#5+#7) vs (#2+#4+#6+#8), map type ?
- 4th game: 2v2v2v2, teams (#1+#8) vs (#2+#7) vs (#3+#6) vs (#4+#5), map type ?
- 5th game: 4v4, teams (#1+#3+#5+#7) vs (#2+#4+#6+#8), map type decided by bottom team
this pattern will repeat (6th game FFA again) until 1st contender drops.
- the remaining 7 players will then start with a an FFA wonder game on Michi (yes! just to celebrate that 1st is over the edge)
- After this a 3v4 game (#1+#2+#3) vs (#4+#5+#6+#7), open land map << this will be an opportunity to comeback for the weaker players
- FFA open map type, islands or arabia
- 3v4 game (#1+#2+#3) vs (#4+#5+#6+#7), open sea map
- FFA black forest
etc, alternating FFA and 3v4, until player 2nd contender drops.
- the remaining 6 players will play 3v3's (#1+#3+#5) vs (#2+#4+#6)
- every 5th game will be FFA
etc.
You get the idea. There will be chances for everyone. There will be chances for comeback. There will be chances for diplomacy, sabotage and deception. Even when in one team, players are rivals, and ways to disadvantage each other are allowed. In the end it is about building score difference.
Maps
A variety of maps can be played.
- open and closed land maps
- mixed water / land maps
- sea maps (islands and team island)
- arena ( FFA and team arena )
- nomad ( FFA and team )
- AOFE_Lombardy
- gigarandom
- at least one wonder race on FFA and one in team mode
- relic hunt
- custom scenario's ( suggested by players )
Pausing
- After a game ends, next game has to start within 5 minutes. A delay of another 10 minutes can be requested once by every player, during the 24h event.
- Every 3 hours a pause of 15 minutes between games can be scheduled, instead of the usual 5 minutes.
- If any players fails to click ready at the time the game has to start, penalty time will be counted. If a player reaches a total of 5 minutes penalty time in the 24h of the event, that player is out, and will not continue in the event. The player is allowed to stay as spectator, make comments in chat or in stream.
- "Usual" in-game pausing is allowed, if all players are content. The reason must be communicated to all before or after. It must not take longer then 5 minutes. If the player does not return after 5 minutes the game will be unpaused. After that the time before the player calls himself present will be counted as penalty-time.
Gameplay restrictions
Allowed are all in game alliances, tricks and abuses, "bugs" etc.
It is allowed to lame allies.
Exceptions: laming by fake-fencing (covering area with unbuild pallisades, with no other reason then to deny the use of that area by another player)
Teams are fixed, no changing diplomacy
Restrictions
There should be some rules set, to prevent unintentional behaviour.
- One thing that can not be allowed is resigning as soon as one feels there will no more gain in score. This will lead to most games being aborted before they have even really started. Therefore resigning will be forbidden until the 1st player is defeated. So no early gg's, but fight for your score!
- In addition to this: every player is allowed to break the early resigning rule only once in the event. This way a player can GG a game early, as a strategic move.
- Unintentionally dropped games have to be restored. If for any reason a game drops without intention and can not be restored the scores will be ignored, and the same game setup will be rehosted.
- Taking a break while a game is going in, essentially being AFK is not allowed. Having somebody else playing in your place is not allowed. Violators will be kicked from the event. Is is strongly encouraged to use teamspeak or facecam to prove you are there.
- It is allowed to take it easy for 1 or more games. But you have to play, that is, enter commands, whatever the result is.
Ranking
- the 1st player that quits the event will be #8
- the 2nd that quits will be #7, etcetera.
- the ranking between the players that play the full 24h will be decided by their collected score ranking.
- exception to this score system is when a player gets kicked out because of objectionable behaviour. This person will loose any claim on prize money. All other players that were below this player in ranking will move up 1 position.
This is all a proposal. Feel free to suggest additions or changes!
