I think hidden elo is a must for a successfull ladder, but there is supposed to be an unbiased match making system using the elo to make fair games. In AoCHD they said on stream they had match making, and showed us the "quick game" option, what "quick game" does is create a room in the lobby ANYONE can join, the only difference from a regular lobby is that the "match making/ quick game" is stuck with bad settings.
What they should do, first of all is seperate RM/DM/CS, and then make sure the match making system searches for equal rated players. You could add a clan ladder as well for people that want to play with premade teams.
Visible rating etc is just bad imo, people get obsessed with numbers and are going to be extremely picky who to play with etc, there should be a system finding your opponents, and you should not be allowed to know their exact ELO, but there should be a ladder visible.
In theory is Steam a far better platform then Voobly, just because far more people will join the game through a gaming platform like Steam, but if they don't sort their **** out, we'll all go back to Voobly eventually, and hopefully bring some new players with us. Voobly with all the patches etc is just to hard to figure out for the casual gamer.
