But even we would merge these two lobbies I see the next problem would be again wit spectating, because players who would come from NPL would be fascinated even from 1700 players and I can imagine 20+ players specting every 1700 1v1 game, ebcause it would be just something so new for them. So although I agree with merging NPL and MS which would be really great and in MS could be more like 400 new players, there should be a limit (like 20? people maximally specting one game).
I think that would kill the purpose of having a rating, which is having a notion of the level of players.
On the other hand, if you allow newcomers to chose their level, most of them will overestimate their own skill(specially if they come from Steam where the rating scale they use is higher, so it is VERY EASY to overestimate your level if you come from HD). Those players then, in Voobly, will get frustrated very easily.

Secondly, having just 1 ranking for all players will put everyone on their correct ELO with time.
Firstly, eliminating the rating bonus for the starting games and making people that smurf start at 1400 rating instead of 1600, will most likely act as a deterrant and smurfing will be reduced, I believe, quite significantly.
It is exactly having different levels (noobs, intermediate and MS rating), together with having people smurfing that makes newcomers to not want to go EVER to MS, because they are being bashed constantly by 1350+ smurf players in NPL that in reality are 1500 or 1600+ in MS.
And still, I dont see why it should be 3 starting ratings. It is complicating things for no benefit at all and would make it IMPOSSIBLE to know the real level of players that sit between 1200 and 1600 rating, which is the huge majority of the players in Voobly.
The benefits I see:
- rating displays the real skill of a player better because he gets into his appropriate rating region faster, (with less games) as his initial rating is based on an information he can provide himself.
- less initial frustration for players whose initial rating differs much from their real rating.
- smoother transition for players passing the 1400 threshold
- better protection against smurfs
- With every starting rating you put, there will be uncertainty around that area. By having only 1 starting rating you just reduce that uncertainty to the 1400 demographic instead of having the area from 1200-1600 where you know nothing at all about the skill level of a player within those ratings. By having 3 starting ratings you will just spread out that uncertainty to a demographic a lot lot bigger.
Isn't what we have in NPL right now pretty much your suggestion? One starting rating for all, and a big skill range of players joining (between 1000 and 1600). If we copy that system to MS the range gets even bigger (between 1000 and 2400).The problem with the players that would overestimate their skill level and choose to start at 1600 , is also that they will lose to other players and make them to be really overrated, distorting the whole system. And because that is the starting level and there is a constant influx of new accounts, and the range 1200 to 1600 it is very big, the distorion wont be fixed with time. It just wont, as we can see with what is happening in NPL right now.
