Age of Empires 2 Multiplayer

Hi,

Can somebody explain what is played more these days? Is it Age of Empires 2 HD edition (2013) or Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition?

I understand that on Voobly are still played AOC games but there is not many people. Where is Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition played? On which platform?

Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition is by far the most used now.
You don't need any other platform, DE has its own matchmaking and lobbies.

There is still +500 players in Medieval siege lobby and +200 in new player lobby on voobly.

DE has multiplayer in game. You can play ranked matchmaking (find another player with similar elo you but you cannot choose to play specific map, only limit map pool options), custom lobbies(unranked, play whatever you want similar to voobly after you launch the game in voobly room) or quickmatch (unranked, just use lobbies instead).

Why I am not able to choose a specific map (arabia, arena, etc) when I would like to play ranked match in DE? Isnt it weird? Btw where are the experts playing these days? Or where do the tournaments take place?

It's absolutely normal not to pick the one specific map you like AND get elo at the same time if you win it;

All the top level players play exclusively on DE, same with tournaments, and 1v1s remain incredibly popular.

Thank you all for feedback. Good to know that DE is the most used version including its multiplayer which is incorporated in the game. Thats nice that AoE community transferred towards this version.
One last question: so when I would like to play ranked 1v1 game in DE. Will I get just random map? I think you mentioned that there is no possibility to select a map.

There is map pool which is changing like every 2 weeks and you can ban 3 maps and favorite one in 1v1 RM, although you can queue for 1v1 2v2 3v3 and EW mode same time

Dont listen to the conservative folks, DE is by far than Voobly. You can get it on Steam or free if you have Xbox Gaming Pass. There's 42 civs now so you have a lot more variety and more game modes like EW. Soon another DLC will be coming so more civs.

Yes I think you already persuaded me but actually I see that DE is better. I bought both version HD and DE. I think now HD version is becoming useless.
I am usually not big fan of mods. What are those mods and where I can read more about them?
Also I see that more of you are talking about EW but I have no clue what it is

EW stands for Empire Wars which is a new game mode introduced in DE. You start in the feudal age with more vils, much faster paced gameplay.

There's a mod centre in DE used for downloading various visual/data/map mods. Things like small trees and no snow if you don't like being blinded. The UI is very customisable which is nice. You don't have to play with any mods and only visual mods are allowed in ranked games.

they just released a patch today... but recorded games havent worked for months, you cant ungarrison your units from your ally's buildings, the other week i lost 5 trebs because they refused to stop unpacking, villagers often take the worst paths to drop off resources... but yea really few bugs. And plenty of ppl are still crashing at the start of games

have u considered that u may lack the perceptive skills necessary to recognize bugs

The only bug I think affects most players rn is the Regrouping of units and pathing at certain times (although compared to the laggy voobly era where you were guaranteed to lose vils to a MAA, I would take the current state of the game any day, even if it means I lose the occasional villager here and there).

And the regrouping isnt even a bug lol, its just the way the mechanism works, so not sure what defines a bug in the game atm because I dont see there are any which causes any game breaking changes

I’m grateful for everything Voobly has done for keeping the game alive when we had zero support, but you can’t even compare it.

i can run userpatch on my laptop without any lags while DE doesnt even launch.
So yes you cant even compare it.

I mean Fast forwarding while spectating literally runs smoother on my laptop with userpatch than on my gaming PC with DE. And my laptop is the lowest spec ThinkPad ever.

I do miss playing every game that wasn't exclusively aus/nz, with 300+ ping really was ideal for competitive games, these modern plebs don't know what it was like for us
