What exactly is the difference between highlands and rivers? I can never remember that
highland has extra boars as well.Rivers has more water (usually), Highland has extra sheep in the corners.

Also, at least Highland is consistent whereas Rivers is really weird, sometimes you have water surrounding the map and can do back dock fc and sometimes there is only the highlandesque water dividing the middle. The inconsistency is what makes the map even worse competitively imo.
How so?Multiple crossings aren't straightforward to create in a 1v1. Could perhaps be done by connecting players to the middle island(s)
i think it only makes exploration the key. The player who can read the map better will have an advantage. The inconsistency is what makes the map even worse competitively imo.
So say you play a tournament and have to play Rivers. Now since you dont know how the map will look like, you cant prepare a strategy. What civ do you pick? How reasonably fast can you even check for surrounding water? Gotta find sheep/boars first etc.. Theres a reason Megarandom ( i assume thats MRm) is not a competetive Map. It can be fun to play i agree, but has no place in a competetive mappool. Same goes for maps that can have different Layouts.i think it only makes exploration the key. I'm also a big fan of MRm though

For tournaments you are correct, but Rivers, Continental, Highland exist since 20 years. I think most of the top players will not be surprised by the map if it is one out of several possible versions. Usually it's 2-3 different versions, but then also turned around by 90 or 180 degrees. If I had never played Arabia before, I might also be really surprised that it sometimes can have lakes or big hills and sometimes not.You don't get the point. The basic layout of a map HAS to be known for competitive play. You cant just have a map possibly change its character every game. Adapting and everything is fine but the basic layout has to be known.
