Worst civ in my hands is Turks.
I tend to use skirms-spears at times, so...
In castle age I have all other options, including good knights and camels, but in imperial the lack of paladin, skirms and spears hurts. I am not good with cannons or bombard towers, so I have to use HScorpions, Champs, hand cannons and cavalry. Not bad, but without map control I cannot play well.
I am also bad with Britons or Aztecs. In general, if my civ lacks Paladins, War Wagons, Mayan Eagles and HScorpions I am out of strong pushing units for my style.
Following on from Marathon's post above, what's the reason that puts you off about playing a certain civ (or group of civs)?
I'm thinking in terms of gaps in the tech tree of the civ(s) in question, because civ bonuses don’t matter if you're playing mirror matches. So what is it that will put you off most?
No paladins?
No siege ram?
No siege onager?
Poor monks?
Poor navy?
Lack of gunpowder units?
No bracer?
No bloodlines?
Lacking one of the final armour upgrades at the blacksmith? Like Goths, Celts, Japanese, Vikings and Koreans.
No economic bonus in the dark age?
A unique unit that is too expensive or simply not as good as advertised?
A unique technology that is too expensive or simply doesn't add much (Berserkergang?)
Being very gold dependent?
==========
There's a whole bunch pf stuff in AOC that's great to have like siege engineers, but if you don't have a it, it's no big deal, your rams and trebs can still destroy buildings effectively. Another example would be the Teutons not having husbandry. A bit of speed is lost but their paladins are still have all the HP, armor and attack that everyone else has and it's not really a problem.

Two civs that I'm always wary of playing with are
Turks
Great civ on the face of it. The best gunpowder, best cavalry in the game of any non cavalry civ, good navy, solid monks, everything available at the blacksmith.
But then you look at what they don't have. This is by no means a comprehensive list, just the major omissions:
They're really gold dependent so if they don't have it they have nothing to fall back on.
Also their unique tech isn't amazing and it costs loads of stone.
What looks like an awesome civ when you read the bonuses is actually missing some understated but critically important stuff.
Teutons
Free murder holes and cheap farms are genius, but unique unit is so slow it's vulnerable to lots of things. Unique tech is expensive and whilst good on the face of it still doesn't protect against trebs. Very gold dependent without having gold shaft mining as well. Also don't like not having light cavalry let alone hussar, and lack of bracer isn't great for a number of things.
