01 Alpine Valley
Original (“Alpine”) by Chrazini (2020). Your town center is in the middle of the map, close to your enemy’s. You will have herdables, berries and a little gold available, but everything else lies across a mountain ring.
02 Eyjafjallajökull
Original by Huehuecoyotl22 (2020). A volcanic winter map. The most famous northern volcano of this century fits it well. Most of the map is comparable to Arabia, but in the center lies a big volcano with lots of extra gold in its steamy crater.
03 Fimmvörðuháls
Original by MingudaiLee (2020; Masters of RMS Map Contest), marginally changed for this tournament. The mountains that cover the right and left sides of the map make the space very limited, like in maps such as Socotra and Arena, and a thin layer of ice that surrounds the buildable ground prevents players from walling with ease. Players start with less gold and stone than usual, which is offset by the amount of resources in the middle of the map. Overall a very aggressive map with an emphasis in middle control.
04 Fjord
Original by TheMadCADer (2017; Mad Random map pack), slightly changed for this tournament.
Players start separated from each other by fjords, but teams are connected. The fjords are much lower than player lands and contain much fish.
05 Freezelands
Original by TheMadCADer (2017; Mad Random map pack). Players start in icy pits. Players have lots of natural food but cannot farm near town centers. Wood in the immediate area is scarce. More wood rests in the central pit. Players can expect to have scattered economies and endless raiding throughout the game.
06 Frozen Lagoon
Original by Huehuecoyotl22, with assistance by Zetnus (2020; first used in its tropical variant in Double Cup). Lagoon mangrove shallows, your base might be relatively easy to wall, but then you miss out on the fish in the center lagoon. Ships created inside the lagoon cannot cross the snowy ring around to the shallower outside or the other way. No boars, but crocodiles can be harvested for food.
07 Gobi
Original by TheMadCADer (2019; Mad Random map pack), with changes by Huehuecoyotl22 (2020). Players start on one side of the map each, divided by a forest line with some unwallable passings. Around them just a hilly, extremely sparse desert with some wild horses and camels. No herdable animals, but deer and ibex (with 100 instead of 140 food).
08 Golden Ghost
Original by TheMadCADer (2020; Mad Random map pack), with marginal changes for this tournament. Ghost Lake meets Gold Rush. Pools of water in the ice contain some fish, but you won’t be able to build a dock.
09 Hyperborea
Original by HJ (2015; Anniversary map pack) with marginal changes for this tournament. The first Arabia-type map in the map pool, with slightly bigger wood lines.
10 Ice Shield Arena
By Huehuecoyotl22 (2020), based on “Water Fortress” by Papayapapst (2014; WiC Map Contest).
This was the second last map added to the map pool, when I noticed, something for Arena fans might be useful too.
Start with standard resources on your own fortress on an island surrounded by ice. But you have to migrate to the center to get wood soon. Some ice fishing is possible.
11 Peary Land
By Huehuecoyotl22 (2020), based on “Desert Void” by Chrazini (2018). Peary Land is an area in northern Greenland, where it is cold but too dry to have much ice.
The map is set in the middle of this barren desert, with nothing whatsoever surrounding it. Players spawn with a very limited amount of resources. Wood is sparse, gold and stone are found far away from your starting town center and hills, and cliffs are not to be found anywhere. A few puddles with some extra wood around the map are searched by deer and inhabited by shore fish.
12 Permafrost
Original by TheMadCADer (2020; Mad Random map pack), with marginal changes for this tournament. In 2020 the permafrost is melting and forest fires are common. Players cannot farm near their starting TC. There are fish and hunt on the map which are forward. Aggressive play can pay dividends.
13 Scattered Islets
Original by The_Prophet (2010; Extreme Challenge Tournament), with marginal changes for this tournament. Players start in the middle with only villagers, transport ship and a fishing boat for scouting. The area around is full of tiny islets which they can migrate to.
14 Siberia
Original by TheMadCADer (2020; Mad Random map pack). Similar to Ravines, but more open and aggressive with a higher emphasis on early map control. Wood is available but not dense enough to make walling easy. Many deer are scattered throughout the map, incentivising players to take initiative.
15 Snowbowl
Original “Dustbowl” by Chrazini (2018), in winter theme for this tournament. A desert with a bigger forest in the center and farms around your starting town center. Less extreme than Atacama.
16 Sublimation
Original by TheMadCADer (2020; Mad Random map pack), in winter theme for this tournament. The middle of the map contains a lot of fish but doesn't have space for docks. However, when a shore fish becomes depleted it makes space for docks which in turn can aid players in economy or map control.
17 Taklamakan
By Huehuecoyotl22 (2020). The Taklamakan desert is located in Xinjiang. A cold desert with rare snow. The second map that is very similar to Arabia. You won’t find any oases though, just some clusters of bushes and shrubs.
18 Triple Crystal Valley
By Huehuecoyotl22 (2020). Triple Arabia in a new dress. Snowy valleys with some shore fish ponds and mountain ranges with crystal caves.
19 Winter Glush
Original “Glush” by Papayapapst (2014; WiC Map Contest).
It is a double map, so you start with a 2 town centers, but here is the clue: not double the resources. Your first town center is on a green land with some wood patches. You have sheep, berries, 2 boars and 5 deer, but no stone at all and just 2 gold piles. The second town center though is located on an island, which only has 4 sheep and tons of stone and gold on it.
Invade the enemy water and island? Or attack him on land to get him out of wood? A lot of possiblities here!
20 Yukon
Original by TheMadCADer (2020; Mad Random map pack), with some changes for this tournament. All players start near the center of the map. Players have no TC to start with, but have two sheep and a hunting wolf in their possession. The wolf is not to be used recklessly since it dies quickly to buildings. Large amounts of deer are spread throughout the map, being is the only natural food source for players. So you can choose whether to start your empire in the safe woods or at the shores of the golden river flowing through the map’s center.
