had to tackle this issue for myself 1 week ago -- in the end, Win 7 won.
more and more stuff is being made to work for Win 7 (not XP)
lots of things in Win 7 were made to make your life easier, and the annoying UAC (asks you every time you make any action if you want it or not) can be easily disabled.
some layouts are different, some of the changes I don't necessarily agree with and think were better in XP
but overall, it's a much better OS
looking at your memory, you can use Win 7 x86 -- no need for x64
Windows 7 x64 working fine here I still roll XP on my desktop PC, but installed Win7 on laptop (4 GB) and it feels like a very good solution to advance to from XP (especially knowing that I`m a "do not fix it if it ain`t broken" type of guy ). It is pretty comfortable for working with, and it looks like many of the features actually do what they should - a very positive surprise :P UAC is a quite nice improvement, though it might frustrate regular Windows users not knowing how to keep both usability and safety while doing their every day work.
Just make sure you install Win7 Service Pack 1, and keep it updated. I read somewhere that SP1 solves the occasional freezing issue on Win7, but I can`t confirm as I haven`t played much yet. A good friend of mine also has a Win7 laptop, so I guess we will thoroughly test playing soon
If you have more than 3 GB of RAM feel free to install x64 (64bit) to make maximum use out of it, otherwise x86 is a better solution (32bit).
Hey bugy, what freeze issue are you talking about? i've played like 10 games and no freeze at all, also I've an pirate Win 7, so dunno if I can update SP1 :P
Those playing AoC in early Win7 days know :P People kept dropping out of the games because their system hung (frozen, with music still playing). It was addressed as an DirectX issue regarding the new system (Win7) not being quite compatible with it. I really hope it is fixed now... I guess I`ll know soon :P
You should be able to update, try it now, and leave automatic update turned off if you are not comfortable with it.
I really like W7, and with the AoC fix it works, mostly. Unfortunately does my game still freeze occasionally (1/10-1/15 of my games), this happens however when the game launches from the room, so before it starts, and with W7 on SSD does it take about 30 sec to restart my computer, so mostly people don't even notice, but it is kinda annoying, never found out how to fix it, cause you basically lose all the stuff you have going on on your computer everytime.
well now you have discovered the good speed of w7 , xp is better for old games , but well w7 is the winner for new computers about freezing problem try changing the windows media.
