Why are you using your free time for a game?

A game. Not specifically Aoe. But excessive.
I watched games from players, who have an elo above 1000. The gameplay is fast and they have to play like a machine. I, as a beginner, had a couple of games this weeks. I started to have sequences of the game in my dreams for the first time yesterday. My perception is overstimulated by the screen changes.

The first question was a teaser. My question is:
Why do you want this competition to find out who is the more powerful machine?

Isn't it obvious? Better chances of procreating if my m@a timing is better than my competitions.

It's simple. There is something called dopamine which gets released everytime in your brain you win a game or win a battle in the game. Dopamine is the root cause of addiction - which all gamers get when they play games or do drugs or smoke.

People slowly get addicted to games because of this dopamine and once they get to play some amount of games, they get addicted to it.

As far as my experiences go, multiple reasons.


One, it is fun to climb a rating ladder.

Two, it is a tremendous deal of fun (and frustration sometimes to say) to improve. To spend a every day or every other day (or just every other session which could be weekly) trying to grow and grow and then seeing the results.

Three related to above and maybe this is just me, you actually learn about yourself more. About why you fail or are stuck somewhere and how you can keep getting better and better. A lot of it is rooted in your head if you’re willing to be completely honest with yourself.

Four and lastly for me (no clue how many others would admit this), I think there can be a very deep pleasure in outplaying, outmaneuvering, or outstrategizing someone. Especially when you get to higher levels or even face players at the highest. More of a thrill the higher imo. I think it is something rooted deep in humanity, but that would be a separate discussion I suppose.

All in all, fun tbh.

You can't just simplify something activating your dopamine system as addiction. Addiction is a psychological definition based on a constellation of behavior, associations, and social values.
You can't accomplish things without it. Just look at the anhedonia seen in schizophrenia.
Also, some people can consider normal behavior like drinking coffee and having sex an addiction. I would think, that's a contradiction in terms?

On the subject of discussion with addiction since it interested me some months ago, I think it is misunderstood too.

I forgot who or if it was a psychologist, but someone I came across said like, “If you like something a lot, start hating it, want to stop/quit but can’t and still keep doing it because you get something big in return, that’s when you’re addicted.” I think they are spot on (I had wrong definition of addiction too). Also I think if something disrupts daily life or with above, that’s another sign. Anything else is just “liking it a lot” but not addicted. Can be things Tiekel mentioned like coffee (personally like tea) or sex.

At least I'm a bit of a troll, because I'm not part of the community and I'm not emotionally attached. Aoe2 is currently an object of reflection. Of drunken reflection, I've to admit. Cheers.

It's easier to get addicted to these mobile phone games like"Grow your garden." (Game principle: Merge smaller flowers to a bigger, more beautiful flower). Designed to exploit psychological mechanisms. Dopamine. But Aoe2 players torture themselves to get the satisfaction.

It all comes down to one word: addiction.

Is the addiction arbitrary? The kind of game not important?

One, it is fun to climb a rating ladder.

Imo the invention of a rating ladder had the goal to match more or less evenly skilled players. The urge to "...climb a rating ladder" is fetishism. With this attidude you are always somewhere, where you don't want to be. ... Not under the first 10.000... 5000...2000... and so on. Always on the run. Having a noticeable placement in the statisics could be a byproduct of having had a lot of fun playing a game.

I admit it. It is great. Satisfaction. Sometimes just relief.

I remember an interview, DauT gave. He openly admitted, that he stalled going to school that year, after he discovered the game. Must have been a hard year of some kind.

Ideas besides addiction, which is a thing that attracts:
a) escape/getaway from something.
b) The urge to at least be in control in a closed system like Aoe2
