In the past few years, the amount of prize pool has increased for AOE2 by 10 - 20 folds..
Some of the tournaments that finished just now that had 10 to 30 x the prize pool from tournaments hosted a couple of years ago, already seem less memorable. On the other hand, it seems some of the tournaments do not even need that big of a prize pool for it to be prestigious to win. But because of their name, they get a lot of prize pool. Tournaments under $5k doesn't even seem to get players to care enough to practice or even sign up. There have been tournaments settings where some players who stream seem to be enjoying even with a small prize pool.
The N4C tournament feels like it needs the 100k prize pool for it to generate interest, whereas if the tournament was for AOE2, even 50 k less prize pool would probably be enough.
With all these dynamics what do you guys think a good prize pool in this era for a tournament to be fun to watch, memorable and be taken seriously by players?
