tl;dr: If the bonus was more like "Monks +1 HP per 50 gold spent on Monastery techs," it might open up interesting strategies. Give opinions. OP or not OP?
Currently it's +5 HP per tech researched at the Monastery. That means Aztec Monks get the same HP for spending 1000g on Heresy as they get for spending 120 gold on Sanctity (actually, Sanctity gives +20 HP but the tech already gives +15).
One major issue the Aztecs have is their lack of late game options. Heresy and Faith both cost 1000g and won't be researched until later. What if Aztec Monks have a higher HP limit than they get now? Currently an FU Monk has 95 HP. What if it was more like 120 HP with all techs? Researching the cheapo techs would result in roughly the same amount of HP as before but researching the high cost techs would make them super buff.
Gold cost:
120 - Sanctity
140 - Fervor
475 - Redemption
325 - Atonement
1000 - Heresy
350 - Herbal Medicine
120 - Block Printing
1000 - Faith (also costs Food)
200 - Illumination
200 - Theocracy
3930 gold total
Let's aim for like 120 HP for our Aztec Monk. Subtract 30 base HP, and 15 from Sanctity. We're going to try and add on 75 from the techs. Roughly 50 gold per HP point. Let's round up for the HP gains on each tech.
So
Sanctity +3 HP
Fervor +3 HP
Redemption +10
Atonement +7
Heresy +20
Herbal Medicine +7
Block Printing +3
Faith +20
Illumination +4
Theocracy +4
For 81 HP total. Not quite 75 HP but I don't think 6 extra would hurt anybody.
So this would open up some interesting strategies.
Research only Atonement and Redemption? 47 HP.
FU Monk in Castle Age has 95 HP, BUT without Heresy it will be 75 HP, so that's pretty hard to do. I think it's a fair trade.
Want a 95 HP Monk like in AoC? Research everything except Faith and Heresy.
