As a newer player this is something I fail to understand I remember a little over a year ago when i was introduced to Age of Empires 2 Online through Dreams live stream. I was recommended to play on game ranger. Now I was given a link to a torrented version of the game- which i downloaded and installed without a hitch.
But when i went to play on game ranger, which i had been using for a game called rome total war, I found that i had the wrong version 1.0e was required i had 1.0c. This immediately put me off of the game, I have always found patching games manually a massive pain in the ass. and a torrented game is like patching a nuclear bomb. odds are ull just **** it up and blow **** up in your face.
so last may or there bouts i finally got bored of the game series i was playing - total war - a largely single player game but with a fun fun and close knit multi-player community.
so instead of trying game ranger again I tried voobly. Now in the stream dreams had said and for all intents and purposes i quote "start out in game ranger - move onto voobly when you have an idea of what you are doing"
To my mild surprise voobly had a noob lobby.
Now I am not completely new to online rts gaming so the first thing i did was look out for any mods, script changes and whatever else was commonly used by the community. I found the ***** wood mod and then the wide screen resolution enhancer for voobly.
Also I asked for any clans that would accept new players and get them started. Although i wasnt overly successful i was able to find some people to help me get the basics down.
I played for like 2 weeks and took a break started back up late June have been playing consistently till now so about a month, and i would say i am about a 15xx in the rm lobby.Good bad I have no idea, but i am pretty ****ing proud of it. :-)

So my question is this. Why do people consistently recommend people start in game ranger? I mean the learning curve is steep but frankly it is easy to over come initially. and with the larer community in voobly there are so many more resources open to newer players to get going. I know my friend who has been playing for about three weeks, reached a 17xx rating in the noob lobby a week ago. now, he went from total noob to that in a few weeks.
So again I have to wonder why recommend newer players away from voobly?
****
side note: it may be a bit irrelevant; we are fairly experienced gamers in other rts games and tend to be try hards, for lack of a better term.
by that i mean, the classic noob attitudes that pretty much dominate all online games are none existent. Although we frequently laugh at just how horrible we are. it can be a nice change once in a while to be the guy on the bottom of the totem poll.
And saying that bc ppl on GR are worse then those on voobly is stupid. alll that happens is people learn bad habits, and make any transition to higher level play that much harder.
Tl;Dr
Imma noob, I started on voobly, loved it. Why recommend people to game ranger
