Hello everyone,
for some time now I have been thinking about two tournament ideas and I would like to get some feedback of this community, especially the more experienced organizers. Unfortunately I don't have time at the moment to organize them myself, but depending on how it is received I might do it next year.
The first one is prettly simple. Some time ago there was the "Adopt a noob"-tournament by Hera/Tatoh. I think this is a great format, especially for helping lower level players. However, I would propose to shift it one level down (Working Title: "Noob adopts bigger noob") - so that we have for example an average rating of around 1500 with at least 400 points difference between the players.
I think this is straightforward and also easy to organize, but I am not sure how well it will be received - certainly the thrill of playing with the absolute top players will vanish here, making it more like a 2 vs 2 tournament were you can't play with your favorite teammate?
My second idea is coming from chess, where I have a lot of experience as player and some as organizer. The idea is to play a pretty big tournament in a short amount of time, open for everyone. Also, everyone should be able to play during the whole time. The idea goes as follow:
As written above, any input is much welcome. Is this a concept that might be worth trying (certainly some changes could improve it). Or do you think it is not worth following?

My second idea is coming from chess, where I have a lot of experience as player and some as organizer. The idea is to play a pretty big tournament in a short amount of time, open for everyone. Also, everyone should be able to play during the whole time. The idea goes as follow:
- Playing time: Weekend, announced a long time before so that it is possible to arrange own plans around it
- Swiss pairing system (7 rounds), everyone plays in the same group (according to player number might be split).
- To give lower rated players a small chance, both players can chose their homemap from a very large pool of maps. The homemap is given 10 minutes before the game to the opposite player to give a a little preparation time. The first three rounds are played as BO2, the last four as BO3 with Arabia with a standard starting map (probably Arabia)
- Games have a time limit of 1 hour ingame time (maybe extend to 1,5 h for later rounds?). After the time limit is reached, the player with the higher score wins if the score difference is above 1000, otherwise it counts as draw.
- Large tournament where everyone can participate works towards a community feeling. In Chess, you have large "Opens" where some times 500 or more players are participating on the same time and at the same location - this is a huge experience
- Getting to play and see fun maps, possibiity to prepare strategies
- With a little bit of luck and good play you might be able to play against high level players
- Difficult to organize, some kind of tournament tool/website/automated scheduling and result reporting is absolutely needed
- Will players take a complete weekend of for AoE2?
- Playing against players much better than you is much harder in AoE2 as in chess and probably much less fun, the possibility of an upset is much lower for my impression
- You don't need a tournament to have a serious game against players your own rating, just play on the ladder
As written above, any input is much welcome. Is this a concept that might be worth trying (certainly some changes could improve it). Or do you think it is not worth following?
