Happened to be reading some articles about different scoring systems and seeing that Magic the gathering used to use an ELO system until they changed to something completely new.
ELO still seems the best suited scoring system for overall player ratings on Voobly / Steam etc, but possibly introducing an additional rating system specifically for events could have several benefits?

Perhaps something that could be done with Escape Gaming, but don't see any reason couldn't be some overall 'Event Ranking' that would be earned specifically for players that participate in 'Official' events? (Official as determined by whoever would take on running the scoring system).
Seems fairly unanamous that people see the flaws with ELO in that players can elect to play who they want to and so can avoid the better players to ensure maximum ELO score, but an official event rank - players can't avoid anyone and everyone is elite, so in a way it would / could / should be a much better overall indicator of the age old question - "who is number 1?"
Could also be used for ranking + seeding purposes in events with no qualification as side benefit.
