I propose a top based in 5 factors:
30% Talent: effortless gamestyle, smart play and versatility (contrary to playing only few settings or relying on dexterity)
25% Success in important events (challenge + prestige + prizes)
20% Visionary: contribution to the metagame, innovation and creativity
15% Peak skill compared to the moment of AOEII history which had/have the best metagame (which I believe is today)
10% Mantaining a top ranking in any of the most competitive ladders across time (Zone, Gamepark, IGZ, Voobly)
The percentage counts from zero from a regular flat 2k player to X% that corresponds to the best of all time. All the percentages below are outstanding considering that a solid 2k player have 0% of total score.
If two players have the same total percentage, the one with higher prioritary factors wins, if still ties then share spots.
Notice that the amount of games played by each player have no impact in any way in this ranking

This is my perception on what I recall from these great players I follow and admire, along my 10+ years enjoying this game, but I am also suggesting a system for objective and complete evaluation of what is a eminent player.
The reason Grunt is top 1 is because he earned 50,000 USD in the microsoft 1v1 tournament with 1st place, by crushing his opponent in the final with a secret tactic: a perfect 21 pop scout rush with huns, which is an absolute profecy of the most standard 1v1 ara strategy that popularized only 10 years after that match. He was also a very complete and smart player, who played many RM 1v1 settings and was also a great strategist in team games, winning many important tg tournaments.

I think Jidba is definitely important to the list as he been alone at the top of DM for years and years.
Cool I watched one of his dutch vs dutch matches vs nature pheonix. His micro was unbelievable.

I really like how you try to make your opinion look considered, almost scientific so to speak. Your mind must play tricks on you if you think that you can say that riut has "29 points in talent", and that viper has "28 points in talent". ROFL I love these kinds of posts, they are just hilarious. I visited this thread only to see the viper/biper/bieber fanboys, but sadly so few are claiming him to be the #1 of all time.
I have a hard time ranking guys who were the best in a player pool of 1,000 to 2,000 people compared to guys who were the best when the player pool was 50,000+. As good as today's experts are there success is mostly just a due to time spent playing the game... not any advanced intuition or "talent"... whereas the guys who succeeded when it was a level playing field for everyone and the game was at its peak popularity clearly had some type of inherent ability which gave them a boost over others who had been playing the game just as long.
