Got a PM asking about my views on it on how to improve.
Started out on my rant, and it turned out into a half decent post.

i focus on a few things in imp:
0. make sure your army is doing what it's supposed to, your units are fighting vs the proper enemy units, and they're not suiciding into enemy counter units.
1. keeping economy efficient.
make more mills, often remake lumbers, make sure all econ upgrades are done etc.
2. make sure your markets are making trade carts. despite many players telling me that they're amazed at how i use/push with trash units, gold is king.
3. constantly make sure you are at 200 pop, and that your buildings are producing.
4. make sure to keep on making/adding the COUNTER unit to your enemies.
this includes researching the next unit to use as well, and anticipating what your enemy will do. -- this is not as complex as it may seem! just think about it.
if you're going mass skirm, your weakness is cavalry. any cavalry.
so what do you need? anti cavalry -- camels, halbs, guns, UU
you're going pure halbs, your weakness are archers, guns and siege! counter to it? cavalry!
and so on.
5. RAID
trade and enemy econ.
if you shut down their food and wood, they can have all the gold in the world and it won't help them (unless they're meso, anyway 11)
6. communicate with allies/watch their battles, make sure they're doing the right thing/right unit combos/pushing in the right place
