I had a fascination on old Pro Evolution Soccer charts (PES 5 <3), in where you could see the stats of each football player with a diagram.
When I was 17, I was introduced to the Myers-Briggs indicator (MBTI), which is a way to indicate psychological preferences of people, using four letters.
I thought this MBTI system was a satisfying ground model to create personality types for… yup. AoE2 players.
To describe one player blueprint using only four letters, just like MBTI does.
Here are the four-letter pairs I came with:
— Aggressive (A) or Defensive (D)
Aggressive players love to rush, raid, sneak, lame, forward, say hi to the enemy base as often as possible, and play open.
Defensive players appreciate that too, but the well-being of their own base is what matters most; they like to wall and play more closed. "The best defense is a good offense".
— Optimizer (O) or Peculiar (P)
Optimizers are meta-focused players can be sum up in four words: "Do what works best". They prefer tried-and-true strategies, what they consider to be the optimum one, applied with the best execution possible.
Peculiar players often veer outside of the "predictable", trying to take advantage on the opponent by surprise using alternative, outlandish, unpredictable strategies.
— Macro (M) or Commander (C)
Macro players main focus is macro — economy and resources management. Map control main purpose is to expand your eco (boom), control the extra resources and relics.
Commanders main focus is managing their army (micro), trading as best as possible every time. Map control main purpose is to encircle your enemy base with army and/or buildings to defeat him.
— Strategist (S) or Improviser (I)
Strategists formulate detailed plans, often as early as the first minutes of the game. Map and opponent civ are scrutinized. They stick to their plan, except if things go awry… if so, they'll make a new one. One word: tactics.
Improvisers plans are way more flexible, sometimes messier/more like rough ideas than a clear direction; they prefer to go with the flow, relying on their own skills and experience of the game. One word: adaptation.
— Bonus: Composed (C) or Fiery (F)
Composed players often keep their chill all game long.
Fiery players often rage when their patience is tested.
Examples of players typing using the playstyle indicator (PSI):
DauT: DPMI-C (Defensive, peculiar, macro even if he's an underrated commander, improviser, composed)
Hera: AOMS-C (Aggressive, optimizer, macro, strategist, composed)
Liereyy: AOCS-C (Aggressive, optimizer, commander, strategist, composed)
MbL: AOMI-F (Aggressive, optimizer, macro even if he's a great commander, improviser, fiery)
Nicov: DOMS-F (Defensive, optimizer, macro, strategist, fiery)
St4rk_: DPMS-F (Defensive, peculiar, macro, strategist, fiery)
Spring: AOCS-F (Aggressive, optimizer, commander, strategist, fiery)
TaToH: APMS-C (Aggressive, peculiar, macro, strategist, composed)
TheViper: APCI-C (Aggressive, peculiar, commander, improviser, composed)
What is your own PSI?
This is most definitely a draft, feel free to share your suggestions and ways to improve it!
Edit: Poll added.
