Well I read some contemporary books, but none of them was **** like Hunger Games. I would say the books that I read were pretty good (even if I didn't like some of them).
take a look at david gemmell's Morningstar.
one of my favorite books of all time!
the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind is a great series too, only he, much like Twain and Verne goes into too much of a detail describing certain things/backgrounds, so you might find yourself skipping a few overt descriptions.
Reminiscence of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefevre is a fantastic book to start off with if you ever want to get into trading. It depicts the life and trades of the famous Jesse Livermore.
I read book1 (The Hunger Games), and few chapters of book2 (flames something?) but stopped there),
the book started really good with brutal potential, but it went into a boring love story like many others out there, movie is being filmed btw.
