I've watched some of TaToH's videos on his channel on YouTube and he is fast, knowledgeable, experienced etc. He even plays on a faster speed setting during some of the videos, which is something my noobish mind can't even comprehend doing.
Since I've been paying attention to the RM 1v1 ladder in the last 3 or 4 months, TaToH's been ranked as high as 15 and as low as 35 or 40. Viper has in that time been ranked either 1 or 2.
So why is Viper better than someone like TaToH, who is clearly very good. I'm not picking on TaToH, just using him as an example. I could use any 2k player.
At what point does being faster on the mouse and keyboard, and knowing more build orders or strategies stop being the thing that separates you from the people that are just that bit better than you? Perhaps Viper is significantly faster than TaToH with regard to Actions per minute (APM). I doubt it is enough to make a difference.
But then what makes 2k better than 1.8k? --> Is it in game decision making?
What makes 1.8k better than 1.6k? --> Is it macro or micro?
To give an example, I'm not even 1k. My micro when pushing deer to my TC on Arena is as good as anybodies. A bold statement I know.
But when I try to push deer as well as do everything else at the same time, that's when I really struggle. A LOT. So is that technically still poor micro, or is that poor macro?
Anyway, I just thought I'd try and figure out what people thought separated the different skill levels.
I'll finish by quoting myself from another thread I posted on earlier today.

I mentioned on another thread that this is why I think Viper is better than the other top 20 to top 40 players.
He might be faster on the mouse and keyboard than some of them, but not enough to make a massive difference.
He might know of a few more useful strategies than some of them, but again, nothing that is going to make a massive difference.
In the final stages of tournaments when he's playing against other great players, the difference is that he handles the pressure better.
Psychological pressure is not a tangible thing that exists in the external/real/tangible world.
Psychological pressure exists solely in the mind (or "internal world" if you prefer that term) of the person experiencing the pressure --> i.e. you can't trip over a lump of psychological pressure whilst walking down the street.
I'm convinced that once you get above a certain level, say 2.1k, this game is probably exclusively mental. Your problems (or lack of them) will come from your mindset, emotions, how tired you are, how distracted you are etc, not the fact that your micro is poor or your knowledge of the game is poor.
