As we saw in the Tyrant FFA, games are far more epic when there's something to defend against a countdown.
We used to have incredible games when standard victory was used. Whether it was wonders or relics, there'd be massive fights trying to kill the wonder or monastery, Islands being swapped all over the place and games coming down to the last minute. It was just more fun. Most games would still end before it gets to that point anyway, but when it does get there it adds a whole new element of excitement.
I can't find any of those recs anymore, but I remember an Islands game that had Vile and probably some StorM members that was incredible. There were a few games with the Sheriff that had similar results. Hopefully a few of them are posted here.
TL;DR - Bring standard victory back. It's better.
