Hey guys... Just a couple of suggestions that came to mind!
1) Different relics with different effects
I'm not sure how I feel about this myself because I like the idea of 5 randomly placed relics and the effects you gain (potential win/steady gold) from gathering them but I thought it'd be cool that in addition to or in place of the current relics, you could add some relics that each has a unique effect when stored in a monastery.
Each "unique relic" would be aptly named, have a different graphic or color and each would have a different benefit. Obviously the effects shouldn't be anything major like +2 attack for all units so and so but subtle yet interesting effects?
Relic 1] Provides x amount of gold every y seconds (standard relic - perhaps gold amount increased slightly to compensate for lack of other gold producing relics)
Relic 2] Building time reduced by x%
Relic 3] Reduces gold cost of units by x%
Other effects could maybe be mines last x% longer (sure I've seen this on a different game, perhaps an earlier AoE - I recall villagers mining and gathering gold/stone at regular speed but the amount left at the mine decreased slower), every so slight movement increase for certain units, small armor bonus to certain units etc
...and so on. The effects of the relics would need to be well thought out to balance out being interesting and having some value but maintaining as much game balance as possible.
What do you guys think of this suggestion? Any ideas for relic effects?
My other suggestion (sorry that it's not very detailed) would be to possible add an African civilization (not too sure about North African, I'm guessing due to "Arabization" of North Africa, they wouldn't be vastly different from certain other civs). The same could be said for other parts of Africa but I'm sure there existed some cool African kingdoms during the medieval times which could be turned into an interesting civ?
I suppose an issue would be armored units such as knights etc, pretty sure they weren't present in Africa at those times however there were empires such as the Malian Empire of West Africa which were powerful and had a large military. They were primarily equipped with bows, spears, animal hide shields and had some cavalry - they often used poison tipped arrows (could be a feature of a unique unit or tech) and flame tipped arrows for siege warfare. I think the potential is there!
Another good African civ could be the The Oyo Empire (Oyos or Yoruba people) - Known for their powerful cavalry which was divided into heavy and light - their heavy cavalry were equipped with heavy thrusting lances, spears and swords. Light cavalry was equipped with throwing spears and bows. They also had good infantry with 4ft tall animal hide shields and 3ft heavy swords as their weapon of choice. They also used barbed javelins as ranged weapons. Due to their location, the empire enjoyed easy farming and steady population growth.
These ideas need a lot of exploration so I apologize for posting them so soon, just wondered if they're even worth contemplating further. Thanks guys
