Hello AoE2 community,
As me, you may have noticed the rise of the Captain mode thingy in tournaments
https://aoe2cm.net/ , which primary goal was to make civlization picks more varied, thus making matchups most interesting, instead of playing mirror which was the plague back in the days (no one wants to see mirror, especially when there are 35 civs to choose from now)
A « snipe » (strange name for a medieval strategy game, but whatever) function was then added to spice things up a bit, and remove the possibility from your opponent to play a civilization he picked (a bit like fair-laming, as both sides choose the civs to the opponent can't play).
What started like a fair idea turned out like an absolute nightmare for the viewers like me : THE DELETION OF A FAN-FAVOURITE CIVS FROM AAAALLLL THE MAJOR 1V1 TOURNAMENTS, which are Vikings, and to lesser extent, Britons. Aztecs and Mayans are often banned too, but way less often than Vikings.
THEY JUST VANISHED COMPLETELY FROM THE PRO TOURNAMENT SCENE WITH THAT STUPID « SNIPE ME CAPTAIN MODE » thing.
What is the point of watching pro tournaments where Vikings (Britons) never appear ?
Of course some solutions exists. An obvious one would be to make a civilization unsnipable (eg. when they are sniped 30 times in the same tournament, which honestly is not that far of the real number of times Vikings are banned from any recent 1v1 tournament, look at the current fresh Mario Ovalle tournament when you'd always see a vulgar-fat red cross in front of that mighty berserk, and longbow too), to prevent these kind of abuse of banning the same civs over and over again.
All in all, I know tournament organizers are aware of that major issue, and like many, I hope this cancer trend will die very soon.
