War is Coming is going to be an epic tournament with tons of competition. I'll be quite excited to see which teams are the best and I have been following the games fairly closely. But today I found some information that shows it isn't the biggest tournament ever as the announcement claimed.
The first reason is the amount of money spent on prizes. This tournament advertises a 120k prize pool with a 23k grand prize. But there has already been a tournament with a larger prize pool and a significantly larger grand prize. In 2001 Microsoft sponsored a 1v1 tournament for 100k with a 50k grand prize. Of course 100k isn't more than 120k today but the 100k was 13 years ago and adjusted for inflation this is 134k. Also the grand prize adjusted is 67k today.
You can google "usd inflation calculator" and use one to verify. I checked this value with multiple calculators including the one my economics professor says is the best.
So to conclude this reason:
In 2001 a tournament was held with a prize pool and grand prize valued today at 134k and 67k respectively.
This is greater than WiC with a prize pool and grand prize of 120k and 23k respectively.
The second reason is the amount of entries into the tournament. CoT had 128 entries in the qualifier. WiC only has 64 entries in the qualifier. There are actually more players in WiC than there was in CoT because there are at least 4 players per entry for WiC. But this isn't even considering more past tournaments since I haven't found an easy way to know how many players entered each one. And 128 entries is more than 64 entries no matter how you put it.
So to conclude this reason:
CoT which was held last year went from 128 entries to 1 winner.
This is greater than WiC which has only 64 entries going to 1 winner
I don't really have any more reasons but I just find it funny that when you compare past tournaments with WiC it doesn't seem nearly as big. The winner of the 2001 tournament microsoft held took a value 67k for first prize. The players of the team that earn first place in WiC will split it a minimum of four ways ways which means <6k per person for first prize. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that there is more to the story than simply saying WiC is the biggest AoC tournament ever.
Please don't start a flame war in the comments. This tournament will be quite epic and I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next. I'm not trying to hate on it or offend anyone, I was just surprised to find that there have been bigger tournaments. Let me know if you have any interesting information to add or you found something wrong with what I said.
So we invite you all to find your allies, forge your teams and prepare for the biggest event AOC has ever seen.
