My guess is he is trying to say that the unit walked through the trees despite being fully walled. But maybe I'm wrong

That is not a bug but a new feature, just like in aoe4, units can ambush villagers while they are chopping trees, didn't you guys read the road map, clearly it was stated there.

Btw, speaking of being stuck, few days ago played EW and started with one villager inside middle of my woodline, got like to castle age until that lazy dude finally got cought up by his colleges and started chopping trees...
Not huge deal in ranked, but might want to investigate it before RBW, was on acclivity map.
