Announcement

Are you ready for the most outstanding and prodigious event in the history of Age of Empires? We have teased you enough and are now ready to reveal what we have been brewing behind the scenes. Red Bull Wololo started back in early 2020 and pioneered the use of Empire Wars in major tournaments. The fast-paced, action-packed game mode quickly took off, and we had so many incredible moments spanning through the initial Red Bull Wololo all the way to Red Bull Wololo V in late 2021. As time went on, the events only got bigger and better, and here we are, in 2022, and we are about to blow you away.
To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Age of Empires, we are announcing not one, not two, but three tournaments. You will get to experience the original game that started the entire franchise back in 1997 - the original Age of Empires. You will also get to experience the arguably most influential game in the franchise's history, Age of Empires II - originally released back in 1999. Finally, the newest edition in the franchise, the incredible Age of Empires IV.

Once again, we will go back to Castle Heidelberg in Germany for the offline event spanning from the 21st to the 30th of October. During these days, you will experience the main event of both Age of Empires II and IV as well as the finals of all three events during the last two days - the 29th and 30th of October.

But what exactly is at stake here? Well, we have a total prize of a whopping $550,000.00 distributed among the three games, as shown below.
  • Age of Empires I: $50,000.00
  • Age of Empires II: $200,000.00
  • Age of Empires IV: $300,000.00

Invitations & Qualification

Age of Empires II

For Age of Empires II, you will see the return of all the previous conquerors. Mr_Yo, the champion of the original Red Bull Wololo. Liereyy, the only champion with two victories under his belt, Red Bull Wololo II and IV. DauT, the champion of Red Bull Wololo III. And finally, TheViper, the champion of Red Bull Wololo V. These players have proven themselves to be fierce warriors and have earned a direct invitation to the main event.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in different events leading up to the main event, as well as the two open qualifiers taking place from the 20th to the 21st of August and the 27th to the 28th of August.
You can already sign up for the open qualifiers here and here.

Age of Empires IV

For Age of Empires IV, we're looking back to N4C to find our champions, and with that, Beastyqt, the winner of N4C, and Leenock, the runner-up, will already be waiting to meet everyone else that qualifies in Castle Heidelberg.

Other players must prove themselves worthy in tournaments leading up to the main event, as well as an extensive qualification event, Road to Red Bull held by EGC.
Registration and more information regarding this can be found here.

I sincerely hope we can make this one of the greatest events ever. I'm aware of the commotion there has been following the release of Age of Empires IV, but remember that we are celebrating the franchise as a whole and the incredible history our beloved games have. We can't wait to share even more details with you soon.

For streamers, broadcasters, content creators and so on - I'm not able to share much information regarding streaming policies as of right now. I'll be sure to provide more information as soon as it becomes available. Feel free to reach out to me on Discord, and I'll take note of your interest for later. I know some people have already reached out regarding this, but please do so again now that the event has been properly announced. You can reach me at Chrazini#5687, thank you.

For additional information, go to redbull.com/wololo.

Looks like I spoke too soon on Lierey's form. He looked like vintage Lierey today. That was really enjoyable to watch. Great job by Memb and Nili casting the series too, its been a while since I've tuned in for an entire set and they were great.

sure there could be improvements but geez by way these complaints are worded you would think there was some egregious error made that completely destroyed the integrity of this whole tournament and ruined the future of the game.

it wasn't really that big of a deal, and something that we can feel confident the organizers learned from. if it bothered us, it most certainly bothered them far more.

Classic AoEZone keyboard warriors unfortunately.

Absolutely loving the tournament so far. The production value is off the roof, and the players seem to be having a great time at the castle, which is by far the most important thing.

Yeah one of the mods was saying they had to be finished at a certain time.
Maybe because it was a Sunday?

If that's the case, we don't need to worry, cause AoE 2's final will be on a Saturday, so I'm sure everything will be shown in the A stream!

I heard that they had to be finished as soon as possible because the Castle was about to be sieged with Rams. I assume they needed MbL to handle mangonels from behind the castle.

In hindsight, probably a bad financial decision for viper to commit to Aoe2 with how much he goes home with in the end.

He gets almost as much just by showing up to aoe4, and could have confidently expected to go home with at least 3 X as much if he had committed to practising and staying up to date with the game.

Unfortunatly, Aoe4 casters and pros predict viper won't win a single game in aoe4

This site's great days are behind us now. The forum is filled with explanations or outright attacks on the supposedly corrupted elite class of admins/streamers/players who are working alongside Microsoft to destroy this franchise. Or at the very least arguments about tournament hosts/admins (or anyone who tries to do anything for the game) being totally clueless, negligent or worse.

Most top players were the first to do it, but you can see that as years pass normal reasonable users also stop commenting and after a while they even stop coming in at all. Of course this only accentuates the problem.

I've heard prominent figures like Memb (or Mbl in the case of this thread) say multiple times that this kind of behavior is hurting the scene big time. Because sponsors come here, see all this crap and they think twice before investing. Funny how these overly negative users keep ignoring this and it's always someone else hurting the game. They see themselves as the only light in a sea of negligence and moral corruption. Just tell me this isn't hilarious lol.

Critiques are very much needed. Just not in the way it's done by some. So my criticism of this otherwise top-notch tournament is similar to what some have already said. It feels rushed, compressed. Best of 3 series are too short for such a massive tournament. And different games played at the same time keeps adding to this feeling.

Imagine that for many years you're saving money to do the holiday trip of your life. You want to tour the Indian subcontinent for a couple of months. Pay for accommodations, transport, arrange meetings with expert guides, talk with local officials and even do some smaller survey trips to get a feeling of specific locations. And then when you start your holidays you spend less than a day on each location and the trip is over in just a week's time, in the end letting you feel a bit empty. So much work and so much potential for so little return.

I understand how the production costs are massive (saw some pics of the production team at work and it's out of this world), but I'd much rather have a lower production value so the tournament can be materialized in a longer and more organic way.

Now, I have no clue about the business side of things so I might be spewing bullshit, but I still wonder if you could get a better result for less money by cutting on superfluous things. For instance there comes the point when adding more production is barely improving anything while increasing costs by a lot, I wonder if they crossed this line.
Or maybe doing the whole thing in an industrial unit instead of a castle, like ECL did. Maybe even doing the whole thing in a cheaper country (Serbia or other European countries, LATAM, Vietnam, etc). Just stuff that would heavily cut costs for a very small hit in production value.

Whatever it is I hope Red Bull returns with another tournament again. Or even better, some other companies doing similar stuff.

Did he choose aoe2 for financial reasons though? He was already in great financial status as the top figure of the game, and then Facebook came along to give him an irresistible offer to join their streaming platform. So I'm not sure he chose aoe2 thinking about the money.

Probably not, I agree! But I was really hoping to see him go home with a bit more in the end! Sad to see him knocked out in only the quarter finals!

Hello,

I have never done anything of value before in my life, or hosted a stream, let alone an event. I don’t even really know much about the game I have dedicated my life to complain about. I try to tear down those who have pushed the game I love forward because they had the audacity to make a living from it?! We aren’t here to get payment, I don’t get paid, no one should be allowed to! Some of them are making a good living! Blasphemy!

I don’t care about the amount of effort other people put into our game, do they not know that it takes me a lot of time to complain on AoEZone? UNPAID! I have tried other social medias as the world moves away from private forums in general but no one in these new work social medias believe my conspiracy theories!!!!! They tell me to go away and let them enjoy the game, IN REAL TIME. So rude.

I stay here on AoEZone because I’m sad in general that the game is getting better and I don’t like change or people succeeding. I wish we were still playing on the Zone with 5 second input delay and most importantly no one knew how to tower rush.

I hate castles and sponsorship and money.

Yours,

AoEZone Complainoooooorrr 2022

Well for me what is hilarious is taking 3 comments out of 10 pages about Nili, where people just purely hating him and talking like majority of people do it. There always will be some people with unconstructive critique and can't do much about it, it exists everywhere. And is quite hilarious that you put there so much text about critique of the tournament and how it hurts scene and basically then you said same/agreed with 95% of what people said before you.

I don't remember anyone saying quality of channel A was bad or anything, basically everyone agrees is great, but some decisions indeed are/were questionable. I just find it stupid to focus on 3 comments out of 10 pages where for example people blaming Nili, while is on RB to not stream on their official site, especially that they first asked Dave, but he declined, so I don't see how it's any of Nili's fault at all, but at same time I don't see any reason to focus on such 3 comments, if you are not new on the forum should know by now it's always Nili's fault.

In my opinion most of comments have quite reasonable critique in them. I understand it can sound as being ungrateful, but at same time you can't expect people not critique you if you take away even one of quartefinals set from viewers, also players.

as you say in hindsight easy to say, I think he were expecting better seeding in AoE4 since he qualified first (like they did in AoE2 I think) and normally Lierey would go straight to top8 so abit unfortunate two of the favorites met this early and thats its only single elimation bracket. Also guessing that vil delete game1 tilted him abit, not much to do then when Lieery play like he did yesterday

Funny, was thinking about things recently and with stuff on here, and was wondering where you were/if you left the site for good, then you came along and posted this. Understand and agree too when it comes to being more distanced, I’m the same way as well.

It’s like what a streamer said recently that I was glad to have caught: “You put the internet in front of some people, and they just change. Perfectly fine before that.” Funny, little harsh when it was meant more to the negative, but true as well. The point applies to life in general even. It happened to me as well. Everyone is either giving into or resisting some ‘forces.’ Made some changes when I realized it like 1 year ago, feels like I’m doing something right being mostly a lurker everywhere and keeping most of my opinions to myself. But maybe that’s just me or a select few.

AOE 1 shouldn't take that long. I only watched couple of games of that during the tournament, but from my experience when I played and followed it more closely, usually games rarely last more than 20 minutes. Normally 10-15 minutes. Whoever gets the snowball rolling wins, it's much harder game to defend, when you can't garrison villagers or units and towers and walls generally suck.

Even if it goes all 7 games, I don't expect it to last more than 2 hours. If there's no other issues. 2 hours seems to be what they have scheduled to it as well.

I wonder if the people complaining about the B-stream can recall the Cologne LAN circa 2017, where IIRC the final had to be a bo3 because of time restraints. I would much rather two simultaneous steams than the amount of games being reduced. A B-stream is an imperfect solution, however it is a necessary one for Age of Empires.

It's mostly that my drive to watch the game has been sinking. I used to watch aoe2 streams like 2 or 3 times per week. Now it's like once a month for the finals of some tournament. So I've totally missed aoezone happenings lately. aoe2 justice warriors don't help in bringing me back either. Of course it's all a matter of perspective, to them the justice warrior is probably me ^^
Written communication doesn't help either, I'm sure most of us here aren't idiots, we just look like it sometimes lol

I had lots of fun this weekend with Red Bull though, so that might ignite my passion for the game again ^^

I agree with those saying the production is good but let's be honest it's not the most amazing event ever produced. From missing post-game player handshakes, to showing almost zero behind the scenes footage (thank goodness for the other thread with that stuff), to only having basic player interviews where we learn almost nothing about the player's personalities, to not even putting Mbl and Hera on webcams yesterday, there is plenty to improve. Also it's time to think of a better game mode if RB comes back in the future. I'm not sure what exactly, but there has to be something better than EW that can still shorten the length of games.

Tbh most of it is just feedback, I always get a chuckle at the reaction it draws.

As usual, about 95% of what I've seen as feedback could have been mitigated simply with better communication.
