Eh, it's very doable. Seemed like a reasonable solution. I think the problem is that it's simply a solution that isn't "just hand the subreddit to the old mods." Don't know what the hostility towards the alternative is.
I don't think big reddit really cares about the mod drama and is likely to side with the current subreddit owner if it weighs in at all (possession 9/10ths of the law and all.) Much more preferable to have the old mods back and any amount of additional accountability if possible given both the issues with previous moderation and recent events.
I don't think we need to poke holes on the how/why that happens or suggesting it because frankly no one here is going to decide it anyway. It's probably viewable for the subreddit owner that he could just copy/paste it just as well.
